How the domain name generator works

  1. 01

    Enter a few words

What you sell, a feeling, or both. Two or three words give the best spread of ideas.

  2. 02

    Pick a style and endings

Short and brandable, descriptive, or with a shop word. Choose the endings you’d consider.

  3. 03

    Check availability

The tool asks the official registries for each name through RDAP and marks it available, registered, or not checked.

What the availability results mean

Available

The registry has no record of the name, so it can most likely be registered. Premium and reserved names can still be refused or priced higher, so confirm at checkout.

Registered

Someone owns it. It may be for sale on the aftermarket, but you’d have to contact the owner.

Couldn’t check

The registry didn’t answer in time or doesn’t offer RDAP lookups. Check it with a registrar.

RDAP

The Registration Data Access Protocol, the official way registries publish who holds a domain. It replaced the old WHOIS service for most endings.

Choosing the right domain

  1. 01

    Say it out loud

If you have to spell it for someone on the phone, it’s too complicated. Drop hyphens and odd spellings.

  2. 02

Prefer .com, but don’t force it

A short .store or .shop that matches your name beats a long .com with extra words.

  3. 03

Buy it before you announce it

Domains are cheap. Register the one you want, and the obvious misspelling, the same day you decide.

What the checker can’t promise

  • An available result isn’t a reservation. Someone else can register the name first.
  • Prices. Some names are premium and cost more than the usual fee.
  • Trademarks. A free domain can still clash with someone’s brand.

Questions about the Shopify Domain Name Generator

How the ideas are made and how to check them.

Ask me about your store
How do I check if a domain name is available?

Generate ideas above and press check. The tool asks each domain’s registry over RDAP, the official lookup service. If there’s no record, the name is most likely free. Confirm the price at the registrar before you rely on it.

Can I buy a domain inside Shopify?

Yes. In your Shopify admin go to Settings > Domains > Buy new domain. Shopify sets it up for your store automatically.

Can I use a domain I bought somewhere else?

Yes. In Settings > Domains choose Connect existing domain and follow the steps for your registrar. You keep paying for the domain where you bought it.

Should I get .com or .store?

.com is still what most people type by default, so take it if it’s free and short. If it isn’t, a clean .store or .shop is fine for a store, and better than a long or hyphenated .com.

What if the domain I want is registered?

Look it up on ICANN Lookup to see when it was registered and by which registrar. Some owners sell. Often it’s quicker to adjust the name.

Is the domain name generator free?

Yes. It’s free with no sign-up. It suggests domain ideas from your keywords and checks each one against the live registry data, so you know what you can register.

What makes a good domain name for an online store?

Short, easy to spell and say, and the same as your store name if you can get it. Avoid hyphens and numbers, and pick .com if it’s free, or a clear option like .store or .shop if it isn’t.
