The page is tested by Google’s PageSpeed Insights. Nothing about you is stored.

How the speed checker works

  1. 01

    Enter a page

The home page, or better, a product page. That’s where most shoppers land from ads and Google.

  2. 02

    Google tests it

The tool asks Google’s PageSpeed Insights to load the page on a simulated phone and on desktop, and to pull real-user data from the Chrome UX Report.

  3. 03

You see what to fix first

Core Web Vitals with Google’s pass marks, the lab score, the fixes with the biggest time savings, and the third-party scripts that cost the most.

What the numbers mean

Core Web Vitals (real users)

How the page performed for real Chrome visitors over the last 28 days, at the 75th percentile. These are the numbers Google uses in ranking. Good means LCP within 2.5 s, INP within 200 ms and CLS within 0.1.

Page or origin data

If the page alone has too few visits, Google reports data for the whole site instead. The result says which one you’re seeing.

Lab score (0–100)

Lighthouse loading the page once on a simulated mid-range phone with a slow connection. It moves a few points from run to run. Use it to compare, not to judge.

Lab metrics

LCP is when the main image or heading appears. TBT is how long scripts block the page from responding. CLS is how much the layout jumps while loading.

Biggest fixes

Lighthouse’s suggestions, ordered by the time they’d save. On Shopify these are usually images, app scripts and unused code.

Third-party scripts

Code from outside the store’s own domain, mostly apps and tracking, ranked by how long it blocks the page.

How to use the result

  1. 01

Test before and after each change

Run the same product page before you install an app and a day after. A drop of more than a few points is worth a look.

  2. 02

    Fix the field data first

If real users fail a Core Web Vital, fix that before you chase the lab score. Google ranks on what real visitors experience.

  3. 03

Start with the biggest third party

The top entry in the third-party list is often an app you could load later, replace, or remove.

What a speed test can’t tell you

  • How the store feels on a fast phone and good Wi-Fi. The lab test assumes a slower device on purpose.
  • Real-user data for pages with little traffic. Google needs enough Chrome visits first.
  • Speed after a visitor logs in, adds to cart or checks out.

That's what the free 3‑point review is for

I look at your store by hand, on mobile and desktop, and send you the three fixes worth doing first.

Questions about the Shopify Speed Checker

What it reads, what it can’t see, and how to use the result.

Ask me about your store
What is a good PageSpeed score for a Shopify store?

Focus on Core Web Vitals rather than the score. Google uses real-user data in ranking, and a store with an average lab score can still pass all three vitals. If you want a target for the lab score, aim to keep improving it on your key product pages.

Why is my score different every time I test?

Each lab test loads the page once, and network timing, ads and apps vary between loads. Differences of a few points are normal. Real-user Core Web Vitals are steadier because they cover 28 days of visits.

Why is there no real-user data for my page?

Google only reports it once a page, or the whole site, has enough Chrome visits. New and small stores often only have lab data at first.

Why doesn’t this match Shopify’s own speed report?

Shopify’s web performance report in the admin uses its own real-visitor data from your store. This tool uses Google’s Chrome UX Report and Lighthouse. Both are useful. Google’s data is the one used in search ranking.

Which apps slow Shopify stores down the most?

It depends on the store, so measure rather than guess. The third-party list in your result ranks the scripts on your page by how long they block it. Pair it with the app detector to match scripts to apps.
