How the Shopify checker works

  1. 01

    Enter an address

Any domain works, with or without https://. The tool follows redirects to the final site.

  2. 02

    It reads the home page

Response headers and page code, the same files a browser downloads. Nothing runs on the site.

  3. 03

    Signals are weighed

Each sign of a platform carries a weight. Several strong, independent signs give a high-confidence answer.

What the result means

Shopify, high confidence

Two or more strong signs agree, for example a Shopify store ID in the response headers and Shopify’s theme settings in the page code. You can treat this as a yes.

Shopify, medium confidence

Shopify files are there but some usual signs aren’t. This is common on headless stores, where a custom front end uses Shopify for products and checkout.

Another platform

The tool names it, such as WooCommerce, BigCommerce or Wix, and lists the evidence it found.

Couldn’t identify it

The site is custom built, uses a platform outside the 17 the tool knows, or hides its signals behind a proxy.

The .myshopify.com address

Every Shopify store has one, and it never changes even when the store’s domain does. App developers and Shopify support ask for it.

Password page

The site opens on a Shopify password page, which usually means the store hasn’t launched yet.

How to use the result

  1. 01

Qualify a lead or a client

If you sell Shopify services, check the platform before you write a proposal. It saves a call with someone on WooCommerce.

  2. 02

Check a store before you buy it

Listings for stores for sale sometimes leave out the platform. Confirm it, then run the store analyzer for the rest.

  3. 03

    Follow a competitor

Knowing a rival runs on Shopify tells you which themes and apps are open to them, and to you.

What the platform check can’t tell you

  • Whether a store is on Shopify Plus. There’s no reliable public sign, so the tool doesn’t guess.
  • Anything private: sales, staff, apps that only run in the admin.
  • Sites behind strict bot protection may block the check entirely.

Questions about the Is It Shopify? Checker

What it reads, what it can’t see, and how to use the result.

Ask me about your store
How can I tell if a website is built on Shopify?

Open the page source and search for cdn.shopify.com or Shopify.theme. Shopify stores load files from Shopify’s CDN and print their theme settings into every page. This checker looks for those and several other signs at once, and tells you how strong the evidence is.

Can you tell if a store is on Shopify Plus?

Not reliably. Plus stores look the same as other Shopify stores from the outside, and the old signs (such as a custom checkout domain) aren’t dependable any more. Rather than guess, the tool leaves Plus out.

What is a .myshopify.com address?

It’s the permanent address Shopify gives a store when it’s created, like brand-name.myshopify.com. The store’s own domain points to it. You’ll need yours when you install some apps or contact Shopify support.

Why does it say “headless or custom storefront”?

The site uses Shopify data, such as product images from Shopify’s CDN, but doesn’t run a Shopify theme. Bigger brands often build their own front end and keep Shopify for products, orders and checkout.

Is it okay to check someone else’s website?

Yes. The tool reads one public page, the same page your browser loads when you visit. It respects the site’s robots.txt and doesn’t log in or touch anything private.
