How it works
How the theme detector works
- 01
Enter a store
A custom domain or a .myshopify.com address. The store has to be public.
- 02
It reads the theme settings
Every Shopify page prints a short block of theme details: the theme’s original name, its version and, for Theme Store themes, an ID.
- 03
It checks the Theme Store
If the original name matches a theme on themes.shopify.com, you get a link to it.
Reading the results
What each result means
Theme Store theme
Shopify reports a Theme Store ID, so the store installed the theme from the official Theme Store. This is the most certain result. You can buy or try the same theme from the link.
Based on a Theme Store theme
The original name matches a Theme Store theme, but there’s no Theme Store ID. The theme was usually uploaded as a file: a copy from another store, a development copy, or a version bought outside Shopify.
Custom or third-party theme
The original name isn’t on the Theme Store. It’s probably built for that brand, or bought from a marketplace such as ThemeForest.
The store’s name for its copy
Stores rename their theme copies, often with dates or notes like “Black Friday”. That name is in the page code, so anyone can see it.
Version
The version the theme says it is. Compare it with the latest release on the theme’s Theme Store page to see if the store is behind.
Unknown
The page doesn’t print theme settings. That happens on headless stores and on a few heavily customized themes.
Putting it to work
How to use what you find
- 01
Shortlist themes from stores you like
Check five stores in your niche. If three use the same theme, try its demo with your own products before you buy anything.
- 02
Check the version before you hire a developer
An old version can mean months of missing fixes. Updating is often the first job on the list, and it changes the quote.
- 03
Understand a competitor’s budget
A custom theme usually means an agency build. A renamed Theme Store theme usually means a smaller team making changes on top.
What the theme detector can’t see
- The sections, apps and code changes on top of the theme. Two stores on the same theme can look nothing alike.
- A developer can change the original name in the theme’s code, so a custom theme might borrow a well-known name.
- What the store paid, or whether its license is valid.

FAQ
Questions about the Shopify Theme Detector
What it reads, what it can’t see, and how to use the result.
Ask me about your storeHow do I find out what Shopify theme a store is using?
Enter the store above. To check by hand, open the page source and search for Shopify.theme. You’ll see the store’s name for the theme, the original theme name (schema_name), its version and, for Theme Store themes, a theme_store_id. The step-by-step guide to finding a Shopify store’s theme explains how to read each value.
Why does it say “custom” when the store looks like a theme I know?
Either the store was built for that brand and borrows the look, or the developer changed the theme’s original name. The tool reports what the theme says about itself.
Can I buy the same theme?
If the result links to the Theme Store, yes. A custom theme belongs to the brand that paid for it, so you can’t buy it, but the link to a similar Theme Store theme is a good starting point.
Will my store look the same if I use the same theme?
Only if you copy the content, which you shouldn’t. Most of a store’s look comes from its photos, colors, fonts and section choices. The theme is the frame.
What is a Theme Store ID?
A number Shopify adds to themes installed from the Theme Store. It’s how Shopify knows where to send updates. Themes uploaded as a file don’t have one, even if they started as a Theme Store theme.
Is this the same as a Shopify theme checker or theme finder?
Yes. People call it a theme detector, theme checker or theme finder. Enter any Shopify store and it shows the theme name, the version and whether it came from the Shopify Theme Store.
What is the most popular Shopify theme?
Dawn, Shopify’s free default theme, is the one you’ll see most often, because new stores start on it. Among paid themes, Prestige, Impulse and Broadcast are common on established brands.
Can it detect the theme of a site that isn’t on Shopify?
No. It only reads Shopify themes. If you’re not sure a site runs on Shopify, check it first with the free Is It Shopify checker.
