How the VAT calculator works

  1. 01

    Pick add or remove

Add VAT when you start from a price before tax. Remove VAT when you start from a price that already includes it.

  2. 02

    Choose the country and rate

Pick one of 38 countries. Its standard rate is selected for you. Tap a reduced or zero rate, or type any rate into the custom field.

  3. 03

    Read the split

You get the net price, the VAT and the gross price, plus the same amount at every rate for that country.

What the numbers mean

Net price

The price before VAT. It is what you keep, before your other costs.

VAT

The tax on top of the net price, which you collect and pay to the tax office if you are registered.

Gross price

The net price plus VAT. In the UK and EU, consumer prices must be shown including VAT.

Why removing VAT is not a simple subtraction

20% VAT is added to the net price, so to remove it you divide the gross price by 1.2. Taking 20% off £120 gives £96, which is wrong; dividing by 1.2 gives the correct £100.

How to use the result

  1. 01

Set your Shopify prices to match

In Shopify, choose whether your product prices include tax under Settings > Taxes and duties. UK and EU stores selling to consumers normally show prices including VAT.

  2. 02

Check your margin on the net price

Work out profit on the net price, not the gross one. The profit margin calculator does that once you have the net figure.

  3. 03

Know when you have to register

The UK VAT registration threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover in a rolling 12 months. Below it you can register voluntarily, but you do not have to.

What the calculator leaves out

  • General rates only. Some products have special rules, temporary rates change, and EU OSS and import VAT have their own conditions. Rates checked 7 November 2026; check your tax office for your exact products.

Questions about the VAT calculator

How VAT is added and removed, the UK rates, and when you need to register.

Ask me about your store
How do I add 20% VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1.2. A £100 net price becomes £120 including VAT, and the VAT is £20. The calculator does this for any amount and rate.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.2: £120 becomes £100 net, with £20 VAT. Do not just take 20% off, because that gives the wrong answer.

What are the UK VAT rates?

The standard rate is 20%, the reduced rate is 5% (for example on home energy and children's car seats), and some goods are zero-rated at 0%, such as most food and children's clothes. Check HMRC's guidance for your products.

When does a UK business have to register for VAT?

When your VAT-taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, or you expect it to in the next 30 days. You can register voluntarily below that.

Does Shopify add VAT for me?

Shopify can calculate and charge tax at checkout once you set up your tax registrations under Settings > Taxes and duties, and choose whether your prices include tax. You still file and pay the VAT yourself.

Is Australian GST the same as VAT?

It works the same way: 10% GST is added to the price before tax. Businesses with a GST turnover of A$75,000 or more must register. Choose Australia in the calculator to use the 10% rate.

What are the VAT rates in the EU?

Each EU country sets its own rates within EU rules. Standard rates run from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary: for example 19% in Germany, 20% in France and Austria, and 21% in the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. Most countries also have one or two reduced rates for goods such as food and books. The calculator has every EU country's rates, checked on 7 November 2026.

Which VAT rate do I charge customers in other EU countries?

An EU-based seller whose cross-border sales to EU consumers stay under €10,000 a year can charge its home rate. Above that, you generally charge the rate of the customer's country and can report it through the One-Stop Shop (OSS). Sellers based outside the EU have no threshold. Shopify applies the right rate per country once your registrations are added under Settings > Taxes and duties.
