Shopify SEO Checklist: Free 2026 Checklist for Store Owners
A free Shopify SEO checklist you can work through in order, from indexing to links. Every check comes with the reason it matters and where to find it in your Shopify admin.

Key takeaways
- Shopify creates your sitemap at /sitemap.xml automatically. Submit it once in Google Search Console, and once per domain if you use international domains.
- Shopify lets you enter up to 70 characters in a page title and recommends keeping it to 60. It recommends about 160 characters for a meta description.
- Google doesn't use the meta keywords tag, and duplicate content isn't a penalty, though it wastes crawling. Unique titles, descriptions and copy still matter.
- Some SEO changes show in hours, others take months, according to Google. Record your starting numbers so you can tell what worked.
- Who it is for
- Shopify owners doing their own SEO
- Time needed
- A weekend for sections 1 to 3, then ongoing
- What you need
- Admin access and a Google Search Console account
This is a free Shopify SEO checklist for 2026, built for store owners who want to do the groundwork themselves. It runs from setup and indexing through keywords, product pages, collections, technical checks, images and links, in the order I'd tackle them on a new client store.
Each table has the check, why it matters and where to find it in Shopify. Character limits and settings come from Shopify's Help Center and Google Search Central, as checked on 7 November 2026. For the reasoning behind each section, my Shopify SEO guide goes into more depth.
Limits worth knowing
- Page title60 charactersShopify allows 70 but recommends 60 so titles aren't cut off.
- Meta description160 charactersShopify's recommended length.
- URL redirects100,000Per store. Plus stores can have up to 20,000,000.
- Sitemap/sitemap.xmlGenerated and updated automatically by Shopify.
1. Setup and indexing
None of the later work counts if Google can't find and index your pages. Do these first, and do them on launch day.
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Store password removed | Google can't index a locked store | Online Store > Preferences |
| Primary domain set | One version of every URL gets the credit | Settings > Domains |
| Google Search Console verified | Shows indexing, errors and search terms | Search Console, then a meta tag in your theme |
| Sitemap submitted | Helps Google find every product and page | Search Console, Sitemaps, enter sitemap.xml |
| Site appears in a site: search | Results mean you're in the index | Google, search site:yourdomain.com |
| Draft and test products hidden | Keeps thin pages out of search | Products, status |
My guides to setting up Google Search Console on Shopify and submitting your Shopify sitemap show each screen. If pages still aren't showing, see why Shopify pages aren't indexed.
2. Keywords and structure
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| One main keyword per page | Pages compete with each other otherwise | A keyword map in a spreadsheet |
| Collections built around search terms | Collections usually rank for category searches | Products > Collections |
| Main menu links to key collections | Navigation tells Google what matters | Content > Menus |
| Short, readable URL handles | Google suggests words useful to users | Search engine listing, URL handle |
| No near-duplicate collections | Splits relevance across two pages | Products > Collections |
My step-by-step Shopify keyword research guide shows how to build the keyword map.
3. Titles and meta descriptions
Google describes a good title as unique to the page, clear and concise, and an accurate description of its content. A good meta description is short, unique to one page and carries the most relevant points.
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Home page title and description | Often the page that ranks for your brand | Online Store > Preferences |
| Unique title on every product | Duplicate titles blur which page should rank | Product, Search engine listing |
| Unique title on every collection | Category pages carry the biggest searches | Collection, Search engine listing |
| Titles under 60 characters | Longer titles are cut off in results | Search engine listing preview |
| Descriptions near 160 characters | Shopify's recommended length | Search engine listing preview |
| Pages and blog posts covered | Shipping, About and guides rank too | Online Store > Pages, Blog posts |
My guide on writing SEO meta titles and descriptions for Shopify has formulas for each page type.
4. Product pages
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Original description, not the supplier's | Copied text appears on many other sites | Products, Description |
| Key details in text, not only images | Google reads text, not words inside images | Description and metafields |
| Reviews shown on the page | Adds fresh, unique content | Your reviews app block |
| Product structured data present | Supports rich results such as price and stock | Theme, checked in Google's Rich Results Test |
| Out-of-stock pages kept live | Deleting them loses rankings and links | Products, inventory settings |
| Discontinued products redirected | Sends visitors and ranking value to a match | Content > Menus > URL redirects |
Keep sold-out products live with a back-in-stock note unless they are gone for good, then redirect them to the closest match. My product page SEO guide covers copy, reviews and structured data in more depth.
5. Collection pages
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Intro text on each collection | Gives Google context for the product grid | Collection, Description |
| Helpful filters, not new URLs per filter | Filter URLs can multiply thin pages | Search & Discovery app, Filters |
| Links to related collections | Spreads relevance through the store | Collection description or theme block |
| Pagination on large collections | Keeps pages fast and crawlable | Customize, collection template |
My collection page SEO guide covers copy length and placement.
6. Technical checks
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Canonical tag in the theme | Points duplicate product paths to one URL | Theme code, theme.liquid |
| Unlisted products are intentional | Shopify adds noindex and nofollow to them | Products, status |
| Broken links redirected | Old links keep their value | Content > Menus > URL redirects |
| Core Web Vitals checked | Slow pages lose shoppers before Google does | Analytics > Reports |
| Mobile layout checked | Most shoppers browse on a phone | A real phone, every template |
| Errors reviewed in Search Console | Shows pages Google couldn't index | Search Console, Pages report |
My technical SEO checklist for Shopify goes deeper. Speed has its own list in the Shopify speed checklist.
7. Images
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Descriptive alt text | Google calls it the most important image metadata | Products, media, Add alt text |
| Descriptive file names | black-kitten.jpg beats IMG00023.JPG | Rename files before upload |
| Images near relevant text | Google uses surrounding content for context | Product and collection templates |
| Product images in img tags | Google doesn't index CSS background images | Theme code (developer) |
Avoid stuffing keywords into alt text: Google says it can make a site look like spam. My image SEO guide for Shopify has examples.
8. Content and links
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Blog answers buyer questions | Ranks for searches product pages can't | Online Store > Blog posts |
| Internal links with clear anchor text | Link text tells Google about the target page | Blog posts and descriptions |
| Guides link to collections | Passes value to pages that sell | Blog post body |
| A plan for earning links | Links from other sites build authority | Outside Shopify: PR, suppliers, partners |
My guide to link building for Shopify stores has tactics that work for small brands.
9. Selling in more than one country
If you sell abroad through Shopify Markets, each country or language version is another set of pages to get right. Shopify handles the sitemaps, but the content is still your job.
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Each domain's sitemap submitted | Shopify says every international domain needs its own | Search Console, one property per domain |
| Translated titles and descriptions | Untranslated snippets look out of place in local results | Translate & Adapt app, or your translation app |
| Local spelling and search terms | Shoppers search in their own words, not yours | Keyword map per market |
| Prices and shipping shown for each market | Matches what local shoppers expect to see | Settings > Markets |
Shopify adds each language to your domains' sitemap files automatically, so you don't need a separate sitemap per language on the same domain. My guide to international SEO on Shopify covers domains, subfolders and translations in detail.
Common misses
- Leaving the password on. The store looks live to you but Google sees a login page.
- Supplier descriptions. The same text is on every other store selling that product.
- Deleting sold-out products. Each deletion throws away a ranking page and its links.
- Filling meta keywords. Google doesn't use them.
- Changing URL handles without a redirect. The old URL breaks and loses its rankings.
- Judging after two weeks. Google says some changes take several months to show.

Frequently asked questions
What should a Shopify SEO checklist include?
Indexing and Search Console setup, a keyword map, unique titles and meta descriptions, product and collection page content, technical checks such as redirects and canonicals, image alt text, and a plan for content and links. This checklist covers those areas, plus selling in more than one country.
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes. Shopify generates a sitemap, adds canonical tags through the theme and lets you edit titles, descriptions and URL handles on every page. Most ranking problems come from thin content, duplicate titles and missing redirects, not the platform.
How long is a Shopify title tag allowed to be?
Shopify lets you enter up to 70 characters, but recommends keeping titles to 60 so they aren't cut off in search results. For meta descriptions, it recommends about 160 characters.
Do I need an SEO app for Shopify?
Not to start. Everything in this checklist can be done in the Shopify admin and Google Search Console. Apps can help with bulk alt text, structured data or audits on larger catalogs.
How long does Shopify SEO take to work?
Google says some changes can take effect in a few hours and others take several months. New stores with no links usually take longest, so start with indexing, titles and your best-selling pages.
