Should You Use Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns?

Advantage+ shopping campaigns, now called Advantage+ sales campaigns, hand targeting and budget to Meta's AI. They work when your purchase data and product pages are in good shape.

Checklist card: reliable purchase data, a synced catalog and fast product pages make Advantage+ work, broken tracking does not
Automation optimizes on your data, so the store side has to be right first.

Key takeaways

  • Advantage+ shopping campaigns are now called Advantage+ sales campaigns. Meta's own page says they were "formerly known as Advantage+ shopping campaigns".
  • Meta automatically applies AI across audience, placement and budget. You give up most targeting control in exchange for less setup.
  • They suit Shopify stores with a product catalog, reliable purchase tracking and a steady flow of sales. They struggle when tracking is broken or sales are rare.
  • Because Meta optimizes for purchases, your product pages and checkout decide how well these campaigns perform. That part is fully in your control.

For most Shopify stores that already get regular sales from Meta, yes: Advantage+ shopping campaigns (now named Advantage+ sales campaigns) are worth testing against your manual campaigns. They hand audience, placement and budget decisions to Meta's AI, which works well when the purchase data you send back is accurate. If your tracking is unreliable or your store converts poorly, fix those first, because automation will optimize on bad signals.

I don't run ad accounts. I work on the other side of the click, the product pages and checkout that paid traffic lands on, and that is the angle of this answer. Meta's and Shopify's documentation below was checked on 7 November 2026.

What Advantage+ sales campaigns are

Meta's Advantage+ page describes end-to-end campaigns that "automatically apply AI across your campaign's audience, placement and budget". Instead of building separate prospecting and retargeting campaigns with hand-picked audiences, you set a budget, a goal and your creative, and Meta decides who sees what and where. The shopping name was retired, but most guides and many ad managers still use it, which is why people still search for "Advantage+ shopping campaigns".

Run the test side by side with a fixed budget, and judge it on profit per order, not on Meta's reported return alone.

Get the purchase data right first

Advantage+ learns from the purchase events your store sends. On Shopify, that is set in the Facebook & Instagram channel under Sales channels > Facebook & Instagram > Settings > Data sharing settings. Shopify's help center describes three levels:

  • Standard: the Meta pixel only, which browser ad blockers can stop.
  • Enhanced: the Conversions API plus the pixel. The Conversions API sends the purchase event between Shopify's and Meta's servers.
  • Maximum: the Conversions API, the pixel and Meta's latest advertising technology.

Enhanced and Maximum share customer details such as name, location, email and phone number for matching, so your privacy policy must say so.

Where your store decides the result

Automation finds people likely to buy. It can't make a slow, confusing product page convert. The fixes I make most often on stores running paid social:

  • Mobile speed: in the stores I review, most Meta traffic arrives on phones. A product page that takes several seconds to show the main image loses buyers before they scroll.
  • Message match: the ad shows one product and one offer, and the page should open on exactly that.
  • Price and delivery up front: shipping cost and delivery time visible before the cart.
  • Fast checkout: Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay turned on.

My guides on product page design and checkout optimization cover each of these.

Measure profit, not just ROAS: automated campaigns can lean on discounted or low-margin products. Check margin per product in the profit margin calculator before scaling spend.

By country: consent changes the data

UK and EU / Netherlands: visitors who decline cookies send less data, so reported conversions undercount. Shopify sets up its cookie banner for UK and EEA visitors when you have active markets there. See my cookie consent guide to set it up properly.

US: state privacy laws give some residents the right to opt out of their data being sold or shared for targeted advertising, and Shopify's customer privacy settings include a data sharing opt-out page for those requests.

Australia: fewer consent prompts, but the same advice applies: send server-side events and keep the privacy policy accurate.

What to do next

  1. Check your data-sharing level in the Facebook & Instagram channel and move to Enhanced or Maximum if your privacy setup allows it.
  2. Place a test order and confirm the purchase appears in Meta's Events Manager.
  3. Fix your top landing pages for mobile speed and message match before raising spend.

Frequently asked questions

Are Advantage+ shopping campaigns still available?

Meta now calls them Advantage+ sales campaigns. Its Advantage+ page describes them as formerly known as Advantage+ shopping campaigns, so the product continues under the new name.

What do Advantage+ sales campaigns automate?

Meta says they automatically apply AI across your campaign's audience, placement and budget. You still choose the creative, the offer and where clicks land.

Do I need the Conversions API for Advantage+ on Shopify?

It isn't the only option, but it helps. Shopify's Enhanced and Maximum data-sharing levels add the Conversions API, which sends purchase events server to server, so browser ad blockers can't stop them.

Are Advantage+ campaigns good for small Shopify stores?

They can be, if purchases are tracked reliably and you get Meta sales regularly. With very few sales, the system has little to learn from, so improving your conversion rate and creative usually comes first.

Do you manage Meta ads?

No. I don't offer ad management. I work on the product pages, checkout and tracking setup that paid traffic lands on, which is where a lot of campaign performance is won or lost.

Why do Meta's reported sales differ from Shopify's?

Attribution windows, declined cookie consent and ad blockers all affect what Meta can see. Shopify records the actual orders, so judge profit from Shopify's numbers and use Meta's figures for comparing campaigns.
