Shopify CRO Cost: What You Pay and What It Must Earn Back
CRO is the one service that should pay for itself in extra profit. Here is what the work and tools cost, what changes a quote, and how to check the numbers first.

Key takeaways
- Shopify CRO is priced on research depth, the number of pages and changes, whether formal A/B testing is involved and who builds the fixes.
- The tools can cost little or nothing. Microsoft Clarity's heatmaps and recordings are free, and Shopify's own A/B testing, called Experiments, is included on the Grow plan and above.
- CRO has to repay itself from extra gross profit, not extra revenue. Work out what a small lift is worth to your store before you compare quotes.
- Low-traffic stores rarely need formal A/B tests. Research-backed fixes measured before and after cost less and still show whether the work paid off.
- Who it is for
- Stores with steady traffic and flat sales
- Time needed
- 8 minutes to read
- What you need
- Your sessions, conversion rate and margin
A CRO project is paid for by the sales it adds, so the cost question has two halves: what the work costs, and what it needs to earn back. Most store owners only look at the first half, which is how they end up paying for testing tools on a store too small to produce a test result.
Conversion work is the core of what I do: I've reviewed and rebuilt product pages, carts and checkouts on Shopify for more than 7 years. Tool prices and Shopify plan features below were checked on official pages on 7 November 2026.
What Shopify CRO work includes
A CRO project runs in four stages. Each one has a cost, and cheap offers usually skip the first or the last.
| Stage | What happens | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Research | Analytics, recordings, heatmaps, device checks | A list of problems with evidence |
| Prioritize | Rank by impact, effort and confidence | A ranked fix list |
| Build | Changes on a duplicate theme, tested on devices | Fixes ready to publish |
| Measure | Before and after, or an A/B test | Proof of what worked |
The pages that matter most are product pages, the cart and checkout, followed by collections and the home page. My Shopify CRO audit checklist lists what I check on each one.
What CRO tools cost
Tool costs are often lower than people expect. These were checked on 7 November 2026.
| Tool | What it does | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Clarity | Heatmaps and session recordings | Free, no traffic limit stated |
| Shopify Rollouts | Schedule and publish store changes | Included on Basic and above |
| Shopify Experiments | A/B tests on theme, checkout, catalogs, discounts | Included on Grow and above |
| Shopify Grow plan | Needed for Experiments | $65 a month, or $49 billed yearly |
Shopify's help center says Experiments cover only your online store, not Shopify POS or headless storefronts, and they don't work with vintage themes or Liquid template changes. By default an Experiment splits traffic 50/50 between your current store and the change. If you're on Basic and want to test, my Shopify Basic vs Grow comparison shows what else the upgrade gets you.
What CRO has to earn back
Before comparing quotes, put a number on a small lift. This is the ceiling on what CRO is worth to your store over the period you care about.
What a 5% relative lift is worth, illustrative store
- Monthly sales now$30,00020,000 sessions, 2% conversion, $75 average order.
- Extra sales a month$1,500Conversion rises from 2% to 2.1%.
- Extra gross profit$600At a 40% gross margin.
- Over 12 months$7,200If the lift holds for a year.
Two things follow. At 2,000 sessions a month, the same lift is worth a tenth as much, so a large CRO budget rarely makes sense for a small store. At 200,000 sessions, a lift of half that size still pays for serious research and testing.
What drives the cost of CRO
- Research depth. A walkthrough of the store from a shopper's view is quicker than weeks of recordings, analytics and customer surveys.
- Pages in scope. A product page and cart are a focused project. Every template, plus checkout, is a larger one.
- Who builds the fixes. A fix list you hand to your own developer costs less than fixes built, tested and published for you.
- Testing method. Formal A/B tests need set-up, enough traffic and time to run. Before-and-after measurement costs less.
- Tracking quality. If GA4 or conversion events are broken, they need fixing first, or nothing can be measured.
- Theme state. A clean theme is quick to change. A heavily patched one makes every change slower.
- Ongoing or one-off. Monthly CRO keeps testing and refining. A one-off project fixes the biggest leaks.
One-off project or monthly CRO
A one-off project suits most stores first. It finds and fixes the biggest leaks, usually on product pages, the cart and mobile layout, and gives you a before-and-after number to judge the work by. If that number moves, a monthly program can keep testing the next layer of ideas.
Monthly CRO earns its cost when three things are true: enough traffic to test regularly, a steady flow of new products, offers or campaigns, and someone on your side who can approve changes quickly. Without those, a monthly fee mostly buys waiting time.
If you buy traffic, the landing pages it lands on deserve their own place in the scope. I don't run ad campaigns, but I do build and fix the pages paid visitors arrive on, since that is where much of an ad budget is won or lost.
What pushes a CRO quote up or down
| Factor | Pushes it up | Brings it down |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Every template and checkout | Product page and cart only |
| Testing | Formal A/B tests on many pages | Before-and-after checks |
| Build | Custom sections and features | Theme settings and copy |
| Tracking | Broken analytics to rebuild | GA4 already reliable |
| Cadence | Monthly program | One focused project |
Hidden costs in CRO
- A plan upgrade. Native A/B testing needs Grow or above. Third-party testing apps add a monthly fee on top.
- Apps that a fix needs. Reviews, bundles or upsells can bring a new subscription. Check the price before approving the fix.
- Speed. Every new app or script can slow the store and undo part of the gain. My speed optimization cost guide covers that side.
- Content and photos. Better product images, size guides and delivery details often need your team's time.
- Waiting time. A test on a low-traffic page may need weeks to reach a clear result, and the store keeps paying for tools meanwhile.
How to compare CRO quotes
- Ask for the evidence. Will each recommendation link to data, a recording or a known pattern?
- Ask how fixes are ranked. Impact, effort and confidence is a sound method. "Best practices" is not.
- Ask who builds. Is implementation included, on a duplicate theme, with rollback?
- Ask how results are measured. A/B tests only make sense with enough traffic. Ask what happens if you don't have it.
- Be careful with guarantees. A promised conversion rate is a sales line. Nobody controls your traffic mix or season.
What a fixed CRO quote should include
- The pages and devices in scope.
- The research methods: analytics, recordings, heatmaps, device testing.
- The deliverable: a ranked fix list, and ideally a recorded walkthrough.
- Which fixes are built, and how they are tested before publishing.
- How results are measured, and for how long after launch.
- The access needed: a collaborator account, GA4 and any existing recording tools.
My starting price
My Shopify CRO service starts from $500, with a fixed quote after a free review. The work includes an audit with a recorded walkthrough, a ranked fix list, changes built on a duplicate theme and before-and-after measurement in GA4. I run formal A/B tests only on pages with enough traffic to give a clear result.
Next steps
- Work out what a lift is worth. Use your own numbers in the example above.
- Check your tracking. Make sure GA4 records add to cart, checkout and purchase correctly.
- Watch real sessions. Install Clarity and review mobile sessions on product pages.
- Get a fixed quote for the pages where the evidence points, not for the whole store at once.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Shopify CRO cost?
It depends on research depth, the pages in scope, whether fixes are built for you and whether formal A/B testing is involved. My Shopify CRO service starts from $500, with a fixed quote after a free review.
Do I need paid tools for Shopify CRO?
Not necessarily. Microsoft Clarity offers free heatmaps and session recordings, and Shopify Experiments lets stores on Grow and above run A/B tests without a separate testing app.
Which Shopify plan do I need for A/B testing?
Shopify help center says Experiments are available on the Grow plan or higher. Rollouts, for scheduling and publishing changes, are available on Basic and above.
Is CRO worth it for a small Shopify store?
Often only in a small, focused form. A lift on low traffic adds little profit, so a short audit and a few fixes measured before and after usually make more sense than a monthly program.
How do I know if CRO work paid off?
Compare conversion rate, average order value and revenue per session before and after, over the same period and traffic mix. On pages with enough traffic, an A/B test gives a clearer answer.
Should a CRO agency guarantee a conversion rate?
Be careful with any guarantee. Conversion depends on traffic, season and offers no one fully controls. Ask for evidence-based fixes and an agreed way to measure them instead.
