How to Get Your Shopify Store on Google Shopping for Free
Google shows products for free across Search, the Shopping tab, Images, Lens and YouTube. Here is how a Shopify store qualifies, what blocks approval and how to get listings shown more often.

Key takeaways
- Shopify's Google & YouTube app syncs your products to Google Merchant Center, and stores set up through it are automatically opted in to free listings.
- Free listings can appear on Google Search, the Shopping tab, Images, Lens, YouTube, Maps and Gemini, as listed by Google on 7 November 2026.
- Your store must be public, have a refund policy and terms of service, show contact details and ship to a supported country.
- Google doesn't guarantee free listings will show. Product data quality, such as titles, GTINs and accurate prices, decides how often they do.
- Who it is for
- Stores new to Google Shopping
- Time needed

- What you need
- A Google account and live store
To get your Shopify store on Google Shopping for free, install the Google & YouTube app, connect a Google Merchant Center account and sync your products. Stores that set up Merchant Center through the app are opted in to free listings automatically, so approved products can appear on the Shopping tab, Google Search, Images, Lens and YouTube without paying for ads. Showing isn't guaranteed, and the quality of your product data decides how often they appear.
I set this up on most stores I work on, because it costs nothing beyond time. The setup itself is quick. The time goes into fixing the product data and policy issues that stop approval.
What Google free listings are
Free listings are product results that Google shows without a click charge. Google's Merchant Center help lists the places they can appear: Google Search, Maps, Gemini, YouTube, the Shopping tab, Images and Lens. In most cases the feature is on by default, and you can see its status in Merchant Center under the Free listings card in Marketing methods.
They differ from Shopping ads in two ways: you don't pay per click, and you don't control placement. Google matches your products to searches using the data you send, so a well-described product shows more often than a vague one.
What your Shopify store needs
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|---|
| Public store | Private mode must be off |
| Payment provider | An active provider in Settings |
| Policies | Refund policy and terms in the footer |
| Contact details | Email, phone, address or form, visible |
| Shipping | Rates in your General shipping profile |
| Currency | Matches the country you sell to |
| Product IDs | GTIN, or MPN and brand |
Shopify also notes that product options, including variants, need to be in English to sync, and that the Merchant Center account must be tied to a verified domain not used by another account.
How to set it up
- Fix the store basics first. Turn off the password page, publish your refund policy and terms of service, add them to the footer menu and put contact details on a page.
- Set up shipping. Add a shipping zone in your General profile for each country you ship to.
- Install the Google & YouTube app from the Shopify App Store and sign in with your Google account.
- Connect or create a Merchant Center account. Creating it through the app opts you in to free listings automatically. If you created it elsewhere, confirm free listings in Merchant Center yourself.
- Sync your products and wait for Google to review them.
- Fix any disapprovals shown in the app or in Merchant Center, product by product.
Product data that gets listings shown
Google says it relies on the data you provide to match products with searches. In my experience, these fixes make the biggest difference:
- Clear titles that start with what the product is, then brand, size, color or material.
- GTINs (barcodes) in the barcode field for branded products. Google requires a unique product identifier, using a GTIN where one exists.
- A Google product category on each product, so it is classified correctly.
- Apparel attributes such as age group, gender, color and size for clothing.
- Prices and stock that match the store. Mismatches lead to disapprovals.
- Clean main images of the product itself, without promotional text.
The same work helps your organic product pages too. My guide to product page SEO covers titles and descriptions in more depth.
Selling outside the US
Free listings work in many countries, but your store must sell in a supported country or region, and Shopify says the Google & YouTube channel is only available in certain countries and currencies. Sell in the local currency of each country you target: £ for the UK, € for the Netherlands and A$ for Australia. Some countries require shipping costs in the feed, and offers without them are disapproved. Carrier-calculated rates only sync for certain carriers in Australia, Germany and the US, so UK and Dutch stores usually need flat rates in the General profile. My guide to shipping rates and zones shows how to set them up.
What to do next
- Check the requirements table against your store today, starting with policies and contact details.
- Install the app and sync, then fix every disapproval before adding more products.
- Improve titles and GTINs on your best sellers first.
- Track results in Merchant Center's Performance page and in your Shopify sales reports.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google Shopping free for Shopify stores?
Yes, free listings cost nothing. You pay only if you choose to run Shopping ads. Installing the Google & YouTube app is also free.
How long does it take for products to show on Google Shopping?
Google reviews synced products before they can show, and the time varies. Even once approved, Google doesn't guarantee free listings will appear, because it matches products to searches using your data.
Why are my Shopify products disapproved in Merchant Center?
Common reasons are missing GTINs or brand, missing shipping costs, prices that don't match the store, variant options not in English and missing policies. The app and Merchant Center show the reason for each product.
Do I need a custom domain for Google free listings?
Merchant Center must be tied to a verified domain that isn't associated with another account. In practice, a custom domain is the cleaner choice, and it also looks more trustworthy to shoppers.
Can I get free listings without the Google & YouTube app?
Yes, you can upload a product feed to Merchant Center another way, then confirm free listings there. The app is simpler for most Shopify stores because it keeps products, prices and stock in sync.
Do free listings help my SEO?
They are a separate channel from organic search results, but the same work helps both. Clear titles, accurate data and good images improve free listings and product page rankings.
