How Many Ad Creatives Should You Test?

Three to five distinct concepts is the sweet spot for most stores. Your budget, not the platform limit, decides how many you can judge.

Card on ad creative testing: test 3 to 5 distinct concepts, size tests to your budget, match the landing page, and skip 20 tiny variations
Test 3 to 5 different concepts, sized to what your budget can judge.

Key takeaways

  • Test 3 to 5 clearly different creative concepts at a time, not 20 small variations of one idea.
  • Your budget sets the ceiling: each creative needs enough spend to collect a few purchases before you can judge it.
  • Meta's Advantage+ shopping campaigns allow up to 150 creative combinations, against 50 for manual campaigns, but a small budget can't feed that many.
  • If a creative wins on clicks but not on sales, test the landing page, not another creative.

What you need
A weekly test budget

For most Shopify stores, 3 to 5 distinct ad creatives per test is the right number. Fewer than three tells you little; more than five spreads a normal budget so thin that no single ad gets enough purchases to judge. Make each one a different idea, with a different hook or angle, rather than the same video with a new color of text.

I come at ad creative testing from the conversion side: I don't run ad accounts, but I see what happens when a winning creative sends people to a page that doesn't match it. Platform limits below are from Meta's and TikTok's developer and help docs, as checked on 7 November 2026.

Concepts first, variations later

Test levelWhat changesExample
ConceptThe core angleProblem solved vs gift idea vs founder story
FormatHow it's shownVideo vs static image vs carousel
HookFirst line or first secondsQuestion vs bold claim vs demo
CopyHeadline and textPrice-led vs benefit-led

Test from the top of the table down. A new concept can change results a lot; a new headline on a losing concept rarely rescues it. Once a concept wins, make variations of its hook and copy to keep it fresh.

How many creatives your budget can test

Here's the rule of thumb I use with store owners. Divide your weekly test budget by your target cost per purchase. That's roughly how many purchases you can buy in a week. You want a handful of purchases per creative before deciding, so the number of creatives you can judge is small.

Illustrative test budget

  • Weekly budget at $50 a day$350At a $25 target cost per purchase, about 14 purchases a week.
  • Creatives you can judge3Roughly 4 to 5 purchases each, enough to spot a clear loser.
Illustrative numbers only. Use your own margin and cost per purchase.

If your budget is smaller, test two concepts and let them run longer. On TikTok, keep in mind the platform's own floor: its help center says ad group daily budgets must exceed $20 and campaign daily budgets $50.

Meta's built-in testing tools

  • Advantage+ shopping campaigns: Meta's developer docs say these allow up to 150 creative combinations, compared with 50 for manual campaigns, and each has a single ad set.
  • Flexible ad format: you group images, videos and text in one ad and Meta picks the format to show. Each group allows up to 5 texts per text type, and it works with the Sales and App promotion objectives.
  • Dynamic creative: mixes assets automatically, but you can only create one ad per ad set, so it's harder to read which concept won.

These tools are good at finding a winning mix. They're weaker at telling you why it won. For learning, separate ads per concept are easier to read.

Test the page, not just the ad

A creative that gets cheap clicks and few sales is often a page problem. The ad promised one thing and the page showed another: a different price, a variant that's out of stock, or a homepage instead of the product. Before you make creative number six, check that each ad lands on a page that continues its message. My guide to A/B testing on Shopify shows how to test the page itself.

Match rule: the first screen of the landing page should show the product, offer and wording from the ad. If the ad leads with "free UK delivery", so should the page.

When to judge a creative

Give each test a fair run before you cut anything. Changing ads mid-test can reset Meta's learning. I cover timing in how long to run an ad before judging it, and making better concepts in my guide to scroll-stopping ad creatives.

What to do next

  1. Write down 3 to 5 concepts that differ in angle, not just wording.
  2. Size the test to your budget with the formula above.
  3. Check each landing page matches its ad before launch.
  4. Fix conversion leaks. My CRO service starts from $500, and a free store review shows where paid visitors drop off.

Frequently asked questions

How many ad creatives should I test at once?

Three to five clearly different concepts for most stores. More than that spreads a normal budget too thin for any one ad to collect enough purchases to judge.

How many ads should be in a Facebook ad set?

For learning, a few ads per ad set keeps results readable. Advantage+ shopping campaigns allow up to 150 creative combinations, but a small budget can't give that many a fair test.

What is dynamic creative testing on Facebook?

Dynamic creative mixes your images, videos and text automatically to find good combinations. Meta's docs say you can create only one ad per ad set with it, which makes it harder to tell which concept won.

Should I test images or videos?

Test both if you can, as different concepts or formats. Meta's flexible ad format lets you put images and videos in one ad and lets the system choose what to show.

What if an ad gets clicks but no sales?

Check the landing page before making another creative. Mismatched prices, out-of-stock variants or a homepage landing often explain it.

How often should I add new creatives?

When results from your current winners start to slip, add fresh variations of the winning concept. Add them in a planned test rather than one at a time, so you don't keep resetting learning.
