How Many Products Should I Launch With?

Fewer than most people think. A focused range of well-presented products beats a large, thin catalog. Here are practical ranges by store type and how to grow from there.

Card on launch catalog size: 10 to 30 products for most brands, sizes and colors as variants, add products in batches, and avoid hundreds on day one
Launch with what you can present well, then grow.

Key takeaways

  • There's no minimum. Most new brand stores I work with launch well with 10 to 30 products, and a single-product brand can launch with one.
  • Every Shopify plan allows unlimited products, so the limit is your time to photograph, describe and stock each one.
  • Use variants for sizes and colors rather than separate products. Shopify allows up to 2,048 variants and three options per product.
  • Launch with your best sellers and add products in batches, which also gives you reasons to email customers.

Your product shortlist

Launch with as many products as you can present properly, which for most new Shopify stores is 10 to 30. That's enough to fill two or three collections and show a clear range, but few enough to give each product real photos, a useful description and correct stock. A single hero product can launch alone, while categories like fashion usually need a slightly wider range so shoppers have a choice.

I build and audit Shopify stores, and the launch catalogs that struggle are usually too big, not too small. Plan limits below were checked on Shopify's pricing page and Help Center on 7 November 2026.

Practical ranges by store type

Store typeLaunch rangeWhy
Single hero product1 to 3Product plus accessories or bundles
Niche brand10 to 30Two or three full collections
Fashion and apparel20 to 50Choice across styles, sizes as variants
Dropshipping10 to 25Test winners, then cut the rest

These are my working ranges, not rules. A store with 12 products, great photos and clear descriptions will usually outsell one with 200 products using copied supplier text.

Why fewer products often sell better at launch

  • Every product needs work. Photos, a description, variants, SEO fields, stock and shipping weight. Multiply that by 200 and quality drops.
  • Shoppers need a clear story. A focused range tells visitors what your store is for in seconds.
  • You learn faster. With fewer products, it's easier to see what sells and why.
  • Stock costs money. If you hold inventory, a smaller range keeps cash free for marketing.

Count products the right way

A t-shirt in five colors and four sizes is one product with 20 variants, not 20 products. Shopify lets one product have up to 2,048 variants across up to three options, such as size, color and material. Using variants keeps reviews and search signals on one page and makes collections easier to browse. Shopify notes that some third-party themes and apps may not support more than 100 variants, which rarely matters for a launch range.

Collections need enough to look full: a collection page with two products looks unfinished. Plan at least four to six products per collection, or launch with fewer collections.

How to choose your launch products

  1. Start with margin. Run each product through a profit margin calculator, including shipping and fees. Drop anything that only works at full price with free shipping.
  2. Pick a clear hero. One or two products you'll lead with on the homepage and in ads.
  3. Add natural add-ons. Accessories, refills or bundles that raise order value.
  4. Cover the main price points. An entry product, a core product and a premium option.
  5. Hold the rest back. Keep a list of products to add over the first few months.

Growing the catalog after launch

Add products in batches of three to ten, each with full photos and copy. Every batch is a reason to email your list, post on social and refresh the homepage. Watch the numbers for each new product, and remove or rework products that get views but no sales. Every Shopify plan includes unlimited products, so growth is never blocked by your plan.

Per-product work by market

Where you sell changes how much work each product needs. A Dutch or German market usually means translated titles and descriptions for every product. Selling to the EU, the UK, the US and Australia can each mean checking tax settings for products that aren't taxed at the standard rate, and some product types need extra safety or labelling details on the listing. Every extra market multiplies the per-product effort, which is one more reason to launch with a tight range and add markets once the core catalog works. My guide to product safety and labelling rules covers what each market expects.

Frequently asked questions

How many products do I need to start a Shopify store?

There's no minimum. Many new brand stores launch well with 10 to 30 products, and a single-product brand can launch with one. Launch with what you can photograph, describe and stock properly.

Is there a product limit on Shopify?

No. Shopify's pricing page lists unlimited products on every plan, including Basic. Each product can have up to 2,048 variants and three options.

Do variants count as separate products?

No. Sizes and colors of the same item are variants of one product. A t-shirt in five colors and four sizes is one product with 20 variants.

Is it better to launch with more products?

Not usually. A small range with strong photos and descriptions tends to convert better than a large catalog with thin content. You can add products in batches after launch.

How many products should a dropshipping store start with?

In my experience, 10 to 25 is a sensible range. Test which products sell, cut the ones that don't, and expand around the winners.

How many products should be in a collection?

Aim for at least four to six so the collection page looks full. If you can't fill a collection yet, merge it with another until you can.
