How Much Does It Cost to Add a New Feature to a Shopify Store?
A new feature can cost nothing if Shopify or a free app already does it. Here is the order I check things in, what common requests really need, and my starting prices.

Key takeaways
- A new feature can cost $0 if a Shopify setting or free app covers it. Shopify's own Bundles app, for example, is free for fixed bundles and multipacks, as checked on 7 November 2026.
- Theme changes and custom sections fall under my store design and development work, which starts from $300. Custom apps start from $800.
- Every feature I build gets a fixed quote after I've seen the store, so there's no hourly meter running.
- Watch the long-term cost: an app subscription you pay every month can cost more than a one-off build after a year or two.

- A short description of the feature
Adding a feature to a Shopify store costs anything from nothing, when a built-in setting or free app covers it, to the price of a custom app when nothing off the shelf fits. My store development work starts from $300 and custom apps start from $800, and every feature gets a fixed quote. The cheapest path is to check, in this order: Shopify settings, free Shopify apps, paid apps, theme code and, last, a custom app.
The cost ladder: cheapest route first
| Route | Cost | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in setting | $0 | Automatic buy X get Y discount |
| Free Shopify app | $0 | Shopify Bundles for multipacks |
| Paid app | Monthly fee | Reviews, subscriptions, upsells |
| Theme code | Starts from $300 | Custom section, size guide |
| Custom app | Starts from $800 | Stock sync with your warehouse |
The last two rows are my starting prices. Each job is quoted as a fixed price once I know the scope.
Common feature requests and where they land
- Bundles. Shopify Bundles is free and handles fixed bundles and multipacks. Mix-and-match bundles need a paid app or custom work. My guide to creating product bundles in Shopify covers the options.
- Discounts. Amount off, buy X get Y and free shipping discounts are built in, and buy X get Y can apply automatically. Shopify says a single discount that gives more than one saving, such as 10% off plus free shipping, needs a third-party or custom app.
- Checkout logic. Custom discount, payment or delivery rules built as a custom app with Shopify Functions only work on Shopify Plus. On other plans, look for a public app that uses Functions.
- Content features. Size guides, comparison tables, FAQs and trust badges are usually theme sections, which is quicker and lighter than an app.
What moves the price of a feature
- How many templates it touches: one product page or every page type.
- Whether it needs data Shopify doesn't store yet, which means setting up metafields.
- Integrations with outside systems, which carry most of the risk.
- How it behaves on mobile and with your existing apps, which all needs testing.
App subscription or one-off build
Two years of the same feature
- App at $20 a month$48024 months of subscription, and it stops when you stop paying.
- Custom buildFrom $800One-off fixed quote, plus occasional maintenance.
An app wins when the feature is standard and the subscription is small. A build wins when you pay a high monthly fee for one small part of a big app, or when the app slows your store. My guide to custom apps vs subscriptions goes deeper.
How I quote a feature
A fixed quote only works if both sides agree what done looks like, so before I price a feature I check three things:
- The store itself. Theme version, installed apps and any earlier custom code, because they decide how cleanly the feature fits.
- The exact behavior. What happens on mobile, with out-of-stock variants, with discounts applied and in other languages or currencies if you sell abroad.
- Who maintains it. Whether your team needs to edit it in the theme editor, which changes how it's built.
The quote then lists what's included, so there are no surprise extras halfway through. If a free setting or app does the job, I'll say so instead of quoting.
Features that differ by country
Many features stores ask me to build are really payment or shipping settings: iDEAL and Bancontact for Dutch and Belgian shoppers, Clearpay in the UK, Afterpay in Australia and the US, or PostNL and Australia Post rates. These usually come from payment providers, carrier apps and Shopify settings rather than custom code, which keeps the cost down. My prices are the same in every country.
What to do next
- Describe the outcome. What should the shopper see or be able to do, on which pages?
- Check the ladder. Search Shopify settings and the App Store first.
- Get a fixed quote. If nothing fits, send the brief through my quote form.

Frequently asked questions
How much do Shopify developers charge to add a feature?
It depends on the feature. My store development work starts from $300 and custom apps start from $800, and every feature gets a fixed quote rather than an hourly bill.
Is it cheaper to use an app than hire a developer?
Often, for standard features with a small monthly fee. Over two years, an app at $20 a month costs $480, so compare that with a fixed quote for a build, especially if the app slows your store.
Can I add features to Shopify without coding?
Yes. Many features come from Shopify settings, free Shopify apps like Bundles, or theme sections you add in the theme editor. Check those before paying for code.
Will a new feature slow down my Shopify store?
It can. Apps often add scripts to every page. Theme sections built for the job are usually lighter. If your store has slowed down, my speed optimization work starts from $100.
Why do some checkout features need Shopify Plus?
Shopify only lets Plus stores use custom apps that contain Shopify Functions, which power custom checkout discounts, payment and delivery rules. On other plans, look for a public App Store app that uses Functions.
Do custom theme changes survive a theme update?
Not always. Code changes in a theme may need to be reapplied when you update to a new theme version, so keep a record of what was changed.
