Do Product Reviews Help SEO?
Reviews help a product page in search, though not in the way most review apps imply. Here is what they actually change, the rules for review stars, and how to set them up on Shopify.

Key takeaways
- Google doesn't list star ratings as a ranking factor, but reviews add unique text to product pages and can earn review stars in results.
- Product pages can show review stars through Product markup. Reviews a business shows about itself using LocalBusiness or Organization markup aren't eligible.
- Reviews you mark up must be visible on the page, and Google added a guideline on fake and undisclosed incentivized reviews in July 2026.
- In the US, the FTC's 2024 rule bans fake reviews and paying for reviews of a particular sentiment. In the UK, fake reviews became a banned practice from 6 April 2025.
- Who it is for
- Store owners collecting reviews
- Time needed
- 5 minutes to read
- What you need
- A review app or plan for one
Product reviews help SEO, mostly indirectly. Google doesn't say star ratings are a ranking factor, but reviews add fresh, unique text in your customers' own words to product pages, can earn review stars in search results through Product markup, and those stars can draw more clicks at the same position. They help most when the reviews are visible on the product page itself and marked up correctly.
How reviews help a product page in search
- Unique content. Many stores sell the same product with the same manufacturer description. Reviews are text no competitor has.
- Long-tail phrasing. Customers write "fits true to size", "good for wide feet" or "survived a dishwasher", which matches how other buyers search.
- Review stars. Product pages with valid markup can show star ratings in results, which stand out on a crowded page.
- Clicks and sales. Stars and reviews give shoppers a reason to click and to buy, and that matters whether or not rankings move.
Google's ranking systems guide does describe a reviews system, which it says aims to better reward high-quality reviews. It doesn't say star ratings on your own product pages are a ranking signal, so I'd be wary of any app that claims reviews will lift rankings directly.
Google's rules for review stars
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Product reviews | Eligible for review stars |
| Self-serving reviews | Store reviews about your own business aren't eligible |
| Visible on the page | Marked-up reviews must be easy to see |
| Fake or hidden incentives | Covered by a July 2026 guideline |
| No guarantee | Valid markup doesn't promise stars |
The self-serving rule catches many stores. Google says pages using LocalBusiness or other Organization markup aren't eligible for star reviews when the reviews are about the business itself, including reviews shown through an embedded third-party widget. Store-level stars on your home page won't appear in results, while product reviews on product pages can.
Setting up reviews on Shopify for SEO
- Choose a review app that shows reviews on the product page and adds review data to your Product markup. My Judge.me vs Okendo comparison covers two popular options.
- Avoid duplicate Product markup. Shopify themes already include product schema. If the app adds a second Product block, check that it merges with the theme's rather than conflicting.
- Test a product page with Google's Rich Results Test to confirm the rating and review count appear.
- Keep reviews on the page. Google says it must be immediately obvious that the page has review content, so show the rating near the product title and the reviews below, not only on a separate site.
- Ask every customer. A post-purchase email a few days after delivery collects far more reviews than waiting.
What doesn't help SEO
- Reviews that live only on another site. They may build trust, but they add nothing to your product pages.
- Store-wide ratings marked up on every page. These fall under the self-serving rule.
- Reviews copied from a supplier or marketplace. They aren't about your store's sales and can mislead shoppers.
- Incentives tied to positive reviews. These break the FTC rule and Google's guidelines.
Review rules by country
In the US, the FTC's final rule from August 2024 prohibits creating or selling fake reviews, offering incentives conditioned on a positive or negative review, and using threats or intimidation to remove negative ones. In the UK, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act made submitting or commissioning fake reviews, or reviews that hide an incentive, a banned practice from 6 April 2025, and the CMA expects businesses that publish reviews to take steps to prevent and remove them. Stores in the EU and Australia face their own consumer rules on misleading reviews, so check local guidance. This is general information, not legal advice.
What to do next
- Check a product page in the Rich Results Test to see whether review markup is valid.
- Set up a review request email for every order.
- Use reviews on the page, not only as stars. My guide to reviews and social proof shows where they help conversion most.

Frequently asked questions
Are product reviews a Google ranking factor?
Google doesn't list star ratings on your own pages as a ranking factor. Reviews help indirectly by adding unique content, earning review stars and improving clicks and conversions.
How do I get star ratings in Google for my Shopify products?
Use a review app that shows reviews on product pages and adds the rating to your Product structured data. Test the page with Google's Rich Results Test. Google doesn't guarantee stars will show even when markup is valid.
Why don't my store reviews show stars in Google?
Reviews about your own business, shown with LocalBusiness or Organization markup, are self-serving under Google's rules and aren't eligible for stars. Product reviews on product pages are.
Do Trustpilot or Google reviews help my store's SEO?
Reviews on other sites can build trust and help shoppers decide, but they don't add content to your product pages. Product reviews collected on your own store do.
Can I offer a discount for leaving a review?
Only with care. The FTC rule bans incentives conditioned on a particular sentiment, and UK law bans reviews that conceal an incentive. Any incentive should be for an honest review, disclosed clearly. Check local rules before running one.
How many reviews does a product need?
There's no threshold for SEO. A handful of detailed reviews on a product already adds useful content, and more reviews mainly help shoppers trust the rating.
