With Shopify Payments, UK stores pay a card rate and no separate transaction fee. Here are the 2026 rates by plan, a worked example and the extra fees that catch people out.

Key takeaways
- With Shopify Payments there's no separate transaction fee in the UK. You pay a card rate of 2% + 25p online on Basic, falling to 1.3% + 25p on Plus, as checked on 7 November 2026.
- With a third-party payment provider, Shopify adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, on top of the provider's own fees.
- In-person card payments cost 1.7% on Basic with no fixed fee.
- Currency conversion adds 2% when a customer pays in a different currency from your payout currency.

Shopify doesn't charge a separate transaction fee in the UK if you use Shopify Payments. You pay the card rate instead: 2% + 25p per online payment on Basic, 1.7% + 25p on Grow and 1.5% + 25p on Advanced, as listed on Shopify's UK pricing page on 7 November 2026. The transaction fee of 0.2% to 2% only applies when payments go through a third-party provider.
Shopify's UK fees by plan
| Plan | Online card rate | In person | Third-party fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | 2% + 25p | 1.7% | 2% |
| Grow | 1.7% + 25p | 1.6% | 1% |
| Advanced | 1.5% + 25p | 1.5% | 0.6% |
| Plus | 1.3% + 25p | 1.5% | 0.2% |
Plan prices are £19, £49 and £259 a month on yearly billing (£25, £65 and £344 monthly), with Plus from £1,800 a month.
Card rate vs transaction fee
These two get mixed up constantly. The card rate is what Shopify Payments charges to process a card, like any payment processor. The transaction fee is an extra percentage Shopify adds when you use a different provider for your main payments.
Shopify's help center says the third-party fee does not apply to Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments, manual payment methods, or PayPal when Shopify Payments is your primary provider. One newer rule: for stores created on or after 12 May 2025, the fee also applies to orders paid with gift cards or store credit.
A worked example on a £50 order
What a £50 online order costs in fees
- Basic, Shopify Payments£1.252% + 25p.
- Grow, Shopify Payments£1.101.7% + 25p.
- Advanced, Shopify Payments£1.001.5% + 25p.
- Basic, other provider£1.00 + provider feeShopify's 2% before the provider charges.
The last card is why I almost always set UK stores up on Shopify Payments. Paying another provider's fee and Shopify's 2% on top rarely beats 2% + 25p all in. My Shopify Payments vs PayPal comparison shows how to run both without triggering the fee.
Other fees that look like transaction fees
- Currency conversion: 2%. Charged when a customer pays in a currency other than your payout currency, for example an order paid in € on a store that pays out in £.
- Chargebacks: £10. Charged per dispute and returned if you win.
- Refunds. Card fees and conversion fees aren't returned when you refund an order.
- Shopify Tax. If you use it, UK stores on Basic, Grow or Advanced pay 0.25% per order after £100,000 in sales, capped at £0.99 per order.
When upgrading lowers your fees
Grow costs £30 a month more than Basic on yearly billing and cuts the online card rate by 0.3 percentage points. That breaks even at £10,000 a month in online card sales. Below that, stay on Basic unless you need Grow's features. My Basic vs Grow comparison covers the features side.
How this compares outside the UK
Shopify sets rates per country. In the US, the online card rate Shopify quotes on Basic is 2.9% + 30¢, the third-party fee percentages are the same, and currency conversion costs 1.5% rather than 2%. Chargebacks cost $15 in the US, €15 in eurozone countries and A$25 in Australia. Stores in the Netherlands and Australia should check their own pricing page, since card rates and local methods such as iDEAL differ by country.
