What Size Should Shopify Product Images Be?
Shopify accepts big files, but the right size is about consistency and zoom, not maximum pixels. Here are the limits and the setup I use.

Key takeaways
- Shopify says square product images at 2048 x 2048 px usually look best.
- The hard limits are under 20 MB per file and up to 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels.
- Use the same aspect ratio for every featured image so collection grids line up.
- Shopify serves resized copies in modern formats automatically, so a large upload doesn't mean a slow page, but a small upload means blurry zoom.

- Your product photos
Make your Shopify product images square at 2048 x 2048 pixels, the size Shopify says usually displays best. Files must be under 20 MB and no larger than 5000 x 5000 pixels (25 megapixels), and PNG or JPEG work best. Whatever size you pick, keep every featured image in the same aspect ratio so your collection pages look even.
I fix Shopify product pages for speed and conversion, and image setup is one of the first things I check. The limits below come from Shopify's help center and developer docs, checked on 7 November 2026.
Shopify image size limits and requirements
| Spec | Shopify limit | What I use |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | Up to 5000 x 5000 px | 2048 x 2048 px |
| Megapixels | Up to 25 MP | About 4 MP |
| File size | Under 20 MB | Well under 1 MB |
| Format | PNG, JPEG best; WebP, GIF, HEIC and more | JPEG photos, PNG cut-outs |
| Video | 10 minutes, 1 GB, up to 4K | 15 to 30 second clips |
| 3D models | 500 MB, GLB or USDZ | Only where it helps |
Shopify also accepts TIFF, BMP, SVG and animated GIF or WebP. Shopify doesn't publish a minimum size, but small images can't support zoom on large screens.
Why 2048 x 2048 works
At 2048 px, a product photo is sharp on high-density phone screens and still has detail when a shopper zooms in on desktop. Going bigger rarely shows a visible difference and makes files slower to upload and manage.
The bigger point is how Shopify serves images. Themes request each image through Shopify's image CDN at the width they need, up to 5760 px, and Shopify picks a format the browser supports, such as WebP or AVIF. An image is never enlarged past its original size. So a 2048 px upload gives the theme room to serve sharp copies everywhere, while a 600 px upload looks soft on any larger slot.
Pick one aspect ratio and keep it
Shopify's advice is that featured images should share one height-to-width ratio so they display at the same size on collection pages. Mixed ratios create a jagged grid that looks careless, even with great photos.
- Square (1:1): the safe default for most products, and it fits most themes.
- Portrait (4:5 or 3:4): suits fashion and tall products, and fills more of a phone screen.
- Wide (16:9 or 3:2): rarely right for product cards, because the product shrinks on mobile.
Many themes, including Dawn, have an image ratio setting for product cards. Match it to your photos rather than letting the theme crop them unpredictably.
File size and page speed
Because the theme serves resized copies, your original file size matters less for visitors than many guides suggest. It still matters for you: smaller originals upload faster and keep the admin manageable. Compress images before uploading, and keep the main image of each product under 1 MB as a working rule.
Google Merchant Center requirements
If you sync products to Google, your images must meet its rules too. Google has announced a minimum of 500 x 500 px for all products from 31 January 2027, recommends about 1500 x 1500 px or larger, and caps images at 64 megapixels and 16 MB. The main image must show the product clearly, with no promotional text, watermarks, added logos, borders or placeholder images. A clean 2048 px square on a plain background meets all of these.
Name files and write alt text
Image size gets the attention, but naming affects search and accessibility. Rename files before upload, for example linen-shirt-sage-front.jpg, and write alt text that describes the product, color and angle. My guide to optimizing Shopify product pages for SEO covers alt text in detail.
What to do next
- Choose your ratio and set your theme's product card setting to match.
- Re-export your main images at 2048 x 2048 px, compressed, with clear file names.
- Replace mismatched images on your best-selling collection first.
- Follow a full product setup with my guide to adding products the right way, or ask me for a free store review.

Shopify says square images at 2048 x 2048 px usually display best. That size is sharp on phones and supports zoom on desktop without oversized files.
What is the Shopify image size limit?
Product images must be under 20 MB and no larger than 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels. Videos can be up to 1 GB and 10 minutes long.
Should Shopify product images be square?
Square is the safest choice for most stores, but portrait works well for fashion. What matters most is using the same ratio for every featured image.
