How Many Product Photos Should I Use?
Most products need five to eight photos, but the right shots matter more than the count. Here is the shot list I use, plus Shopify's limits.

Key takeaways
- My rule of thumb is five to eight photos for most products, and more when fit, scale or detail decides the sale.
- Shopify allows up to 250 images, videos or 3D models per product, so the limit is never the platform.
- The first image is the featured image. Shopify shows it on collection pages, in the cart, at checkout and on the home page.
- Google Merchant Center takes one main image plus up to 10 additional images per product.

Use five to eight product photos for most products, and more for anything where fit, size or fine detail decides the sale, such as clothing, furniture or jewelry. The count matters less than coverage: every photo should answer a question a shopper would otherwise have to ask. Shopify allows up to 250 media items per product, so plan the gallery around your customer, not the limit.
Thin product galleries are one of the gaps I flag most often in CRO reviews. The limits below were checked on the Shopify Help Center and Google Merchant Center Help on 7 November 2026.
The shot list
Think of each photo as an answer. A shopper can't pick the product up, so the gallery has to do what their hands and eyes would do in a shop.
| Shot | Question it answers | Use for |
|---|---|---|
| Main, plain background | What is it? | Every product |
| Other angles | What does the back or side look like? | Every product |
| Close-up detail | How well is it made? | Every product |
| Scale or in hand | How big is it? | Most products |
| In use or lifestyle | How would it fit my life? | Most products |
| Each variant | What does the green one look like? | Products with options |
| What's in the box | What arrives? | Kits, gifts, sets |
| Size or spec graphic | Will it fit, will it work? | Apparel, technical goods |
How many for your product type
- Simple accessories: four to five photos. Main, two angles, a detail and one in use.
- Clothing: six to eight. Add the item on a model from front and back, a fabric close-up and a size graphic. If you can, mention the model's height and size in the description.
- Furniture and home: six to ten. Show it in a room for scale and add a dimensions graphic.
- Beauty and food: four to six. Include texture, the ingredients label and the pack size in hand.
- Tech: five to seven. Show ports and buttons, what's in the box and the product next to something familiar.
Video counts too. Shopify accepts product videos up to 10 minutes and 1 GB, or YouTube and Vimeo links, and a short clip often replaces two or three still photos for products that move, fold or pour.
Shopify's image rules
Shopify product image limits
- Media per product250Images, videos and 3D models combined.
- Recommended size2048 pxSquare, 2048 x 2048 pixels.
- Maximum size5000 px5000 x 5000 pixels, 25 megapixels.
- File size20 MBEach image must be under 20 MB.
Shopify accepts PNG, JPEG, WebP, HEIC, GIF and a few other formats. Whatever you move to the first position becomes the featured image, so choose it for the collection grid: a clean shot that reads well at thumbnail size. Keep the same aspect ratio across your catalog so collection pages line up, and add alt text to every image. My answer on whether alt tags matter shows how.
If you sell through Google
Google Merchant Center lets you send one main image and up to 10 additional images per product. Google recommends images of 1500 x 1500 pixels or larger, and its help page says a minimum of 500 x 500 pixels will apply to all products from 31 January 2027. Images below the minimum won't show, though the product isn't disapproved. Shopify's 2048-pixel recommendation clears both.
Common mistakes
- Only the supplier's photos. Shoppers see the same images on other stores, and they rarely show scale.
- No variant images. If a shopper picks a color and the photo doesn't change, they hesitate.
- A lifestyle shot as the featured image. It often reads badly as a small thumbnail in a collection grid.
- Five near-identical angles. Each photo should add something new.
What to do next
- Audit your best sellers against the shot list and note the missing shots.
- Book one shoot that covers the gaps across many products at once.
- Upload in order: featured image first, then angles, detail, scale and lifestyle. My guide to adding products the right way covers the rest of the listing.
- Review the whole page. My guide to designing a high-converting product page and my CRO service look at photos alongside copy, price and reviews.

Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal number of product photos?
There's no single number, but five to eight covers most products: a main image, other angles, a close-up, a scale shot and an in-use photo. Add more when fit, size or detail decides the sale.
How many images can a Shopify product have?
Shopify allows up to 250 images, videos or 3D models combined per product. Plan limits for 3D models and videos across the store depend on your plan.
What size should Shopify product images be?
Shopify recommends square images of 2048 x 2048 pixels. The maximum is 5000 x 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, and each file must be under 20 MB.
Which photo should be first?
The first image becomes the featured image, shown on collection pages, in the cart and at checkout. A clean shot of the product on a plain background usually works best because it reads well as a thumbnail.
How many images does Google Shopping accept?
Google Merchant Center accepts one main image plus up to 10 additional images per product. Google recommends 1500 x 1500 pixels or larger.
Should I include a product video?
For products that move, fold, pour or need a demonstration, yes. Shopify accepts videos up to 10 minutes and 1 GB, or YouTube and Vimeo links.
