Is Shopify Good for Beginners?

Yes, Shopify is one of the easiest ways to start a serious online store. Here is what beginners find easy, where they get stuck, and when another platform suits them better.

Card summarizing Shopify for beginners: no code needed, $1 a month for 3 months after the trial, unlimited products, and traffic not included
The software is easy. Running the store well is the real work.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify is beginner-friendly: hosting, security, checkout and payments are handled for you, and free themes work without code.
  • Starting is cheap. Shopify's offer is 3 days free, then $1 a month for 3 months, then the US Basic plan at $25 a month or $19 billed yearly.
  • Beginners mostly struggle with choices, not technology: too many apps, a slow theme, and no plan for getting traffic.
  • If you only want to test a few handmade items, a marketplace such as Etsy can be a lower-effort first step.

What you need
A product idea

Yes, Shopify is good for beginners. You can launch a working store without writing code, because Shopify handles hosting, security, checkout and payments, and its setup guide walks you through adding a product, choosing a theme and connecting a domain. The learning curve is in running a store well, such as pricing, photos and marketing, not in the software itself.

I'm a Shopify developer and Shopify Select Partner, so I'm biased toward Shopify, and I'll say where something else fits better. Prices and features below were checked on Shopify's pricing page and Help Center on 7 November 2026.

What beginners find easy

  • Setup. Shopify's setup guide starts with three tasks: add your first product, try a few themes, and set up a domain.
  • Design without code. Free themes such as Dawn are edited in a drag-and-drop theme editor with sections and blocks.
  • Payments. Shopify Payments takes cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay with one setup in supported countries.
  • Help inside the admin. Sidekick, Shopify's AI assistant, answers questions and completes tasks in plain English from any page of the admin, and shows changes for you to review first.
  • Growth room. Every plan allows unlimited products, so you don't outgrow a plan by adding stock.

Where beginners get stuck

  • Installing too many apps. Each one adds a monthly fee and some code. Start with the few you need.
  • Endless design tweaking. A clean free theme with good photos beats weeks of polishing.
  • Skipping the basics. Shipping rates, tax settings, policies and a test order catch most launch problems.
  • Expecting traffic to arrive. Shopify gives you a store, not visitors. You still need a plan for search, social, email or ads.
My advice for a first store: launch with a free theme, 10 to 30 well-photographed products and only essential apps. Learn from real orders, then invest in design and apps once you know what sells.

A realistic first month

Week one is setup: pick a free theme, add your first products with real photos, and write your shipping, returns and privacy pages. Week two is the plumbing: payments, shipping rates, tax settings, and a test order you refund yourself. Week three is launch to people you already reach, such as friends, an email list or your social followers, so early orders show you where the store confuses people. Week four is fixing what those first orders taught you. Beginners who follow roughly this order tend to launch in weeks, while those who start with design and apps can spend months polishing a store nobody visits.

My Shopify vs Etsy comparison goes through the most common beginner choice in detail, including fees and who owns the customer.

By country

  • US: the plan prices above apply. Shopify Payments works for most US businesses.
  • UK: Basic is £25 a month or £19 billed yearly, with UK card rates starting at 2% + 25p online.
  • Netherlands: add iDEAL at checkout from day one, because Dutch shoppers expect it.
  • Australia: offer Afterpay if your products suit it, and set up GST correctly before launch.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify easy to use for beginners?

Yes. You can set up a store without code, using the setup guide and a free theme. Hosting, security, checkout and payments are handled for you. The harder part is running the store well, not using the software.

Is Shopify worth it for beginners?

It's worth it if you want to build a brand and sell regularly. The trial is 3 days free, then $1 a month for 3 months. If you only want to test a few items, a marketplace like Etsy is a lower-commitment start.

How much does Shopify cost for a beginner?

In the US, the Basic plan is $25 a month, or $19 a month billed yearly, after the $1 trial months. Add card processing fees on sales, a domain, and any paid apps you choose.

Do I need coding skills to use Shopify?

No. Free themes are customized in a visual editor with sections and blocks. Coding only matters for custom features, and you can hire a developer when you get there.

Can I sell unlimited products on Shopify's Basic plan?

Yes. Shopify's pricing page lists unlimited products on every plan, including Basic.

What is the hardest part of Shopify for beginners?

Getting traffic and choosing what not to do. Too many apps and too much design work slow beginners down. A clean free theme, good photos and a simple marketing plan matter more.
