What Is CTR (Click-Through Rate)? Formula and Benchmarks for Shopify Ads and Search

Click-through rate is the share of people who see your ad or listing and click it. Here is the formula, what a good CTR means, and how it connects to your store's sales.

Card summarising CTR: clicks divided by impressions times 100, a good CTR is relative, read it with conversion rate, and a high CTR does not mean sales
CTR measures interest. Your store decides whether it becomes revenue.

Key takeaways

  • CTR is clicks ÷ impressions × 100. Five clicks from 100 impressions is a 5% CTR.
  • Google says a good CTR is relative to what you advertise and where, so there is no single benchmark to aim for.
  • A high CTR only pays off if the page people land on matches the ad and converts them.
  • Shopify's Performance by marketing channel report shows impressions, clicks and CTR for channels that send cost data to Shopify.

Your impressions and clicks

Click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of people who see your ad, product listing or search result and then click it. The formula is clicks ÷ impressions × 100, so 5 clicks from 100 impressions is a CTR of 5%.

Google defines CTR as a ratio showing how often people who see your ad or free product listing end up clicking it. Meta's standard CTR column counts clicks of any kind, which includes clicks that don't take anyone to your site. I don't run ad accounts. I look at what happens after the click, and that is where CTR either earns its keep or doesn't. Definitions were checked on Google, Meta and Shopify's help pages on 7 November 2026.

The CTR formula

CTR = (clicks ÷ impressions) × 100

CTR links three other numbers you'll see in any ad report. Clicks = impressions × CTR. Cost per click = CPM ÷ (CTR × 1,000). And orders = clicks × your store's conversion rate. Change any one and the others move.

A worked example

These numbers are illustrative, not benchmarks. Two ads get 100,000 impressions each. Ad A has a catchy hook that promises more than the product page delivers. Ad B shows the product and price plainly, and the page matches it.

MetricAd AAd B
Impressions100,000100,000
CTR2%1%
Clicks2,0001,000
Conversion rate1%3%
Orders2030

Ad A wins on CTR and loses on orders. If you pay per click, Ad A also costs twice as much to deliver those 20 orders. The lesson: read CTR together with conversion rate, never alone.

What is a good click-through rate

Google is clear that a good CTR is relative to what you're advertising and on which networks. A branded search ad, a Shopping listing and a video ad in a social feed behave very differently, so averages from other stores tell you little. I'd compare your CTR against your own history for the same campaign type, and watch the trend.

On Google Search, CTR also feeds expected CTR, which is one part of Ad Rank. Keywords, ads and landing pages that closely match each other tend to earn more clicks.

Where to find CTR for a Shopify store

  • Google Ads: CTR is a standard column for every ad, keyword and Shopping product.
  • Meta Ads Manager: the default CTR counts all clicks. For store traffic, look at link clicks so likes and profile taps don't inflate it.
  • Shopify: open Analytics > Reports > Performance by marketing channel. It shows impressions, clicks and CTR for channels that report cost data, such as a connected ad platform.
  • Organic search: Google Search Console reports clicks, impressions and CTR for your unpaid results, which is the number your meta titles influence.

Common misconceptions

  • "Higher CTR is always better." Clickbait raises CTR and lowers conversion rate. You pay for the extra clicks.
  • Counting all clicks. Meta's all-clicks CTR includes engagement that never reaches your store.
  • Blaming the ad for low sales. If CTR holds steady and orders drop, the problem usually sits on the product page, in pricing or at checkout.
  • Comparing across formats. A Shopping listing with a photo and price is a different click from a text search ad.
Message match: the page a visitor lands on should repeat the product, offer and price the ad showed. When it doesn't, a good CTR turns into a high bounce rate.

For Shopping listings, CTR depends heavily on what the feed shows: the main image, the title and your price next to competitors. A clearer first image or a more descriptive title can lift CTR without touching bids, and the same changes usually help the product page too.

  • CPM: the cost of 1,000 impressions, which CTR turns into clicks.
  • CPC: what each of those clicks costs.
  • Conversion rate: the share of visitors who buy. It decides whether clicks become revenue.

What to do next

  1. Check CTR and conversion rate side by side for your top five ads or listings.
  2. Fix message match. Make sure each ad lands on a page that shows the same product and offer. My guide to designing a high-converting product page covers what that page needs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for click-through rate?

CTR equals clicks divided by impressions, multiplied by 100. For example, 30 clicks from 2,000 impressions is a CTR of 1.5%.

What is a good CTR for Shopify ads?

There is no official benchmark. Google says a good CTR depends on what you advertise and on which network. Compare against your own past results for the same campaign type, and judge CTR together with conversion rate.

Is a high CTR always good?

No. A high CTR from an ad that overpromises brings visitors who don't buy, and you pay for every click. The best ads earn clicks from people who match what the product page offers.

What is the difference between CTR and conversion rate?

CTR measures how many people click after seeing an ad or listing. Conversion rate measures how many visitors complete a purchase after they arrive. CTR happens on the ad platform and conversion rate happens on your store.

Where can I see CTR in Shopify?

Go to Analytics, then Reports, and open Performance by marketing channel. It shows impressions, clicks and CTR for channels that send cost data to Shopify.
