Can I Sell Services on Shopify?
Yes. Shopify sells services as easily as products once you switch off shipping. Here is how to set up a service, add bookings, and decide if Shopify is the right tool.

Key takeaways
- You can sell services on Shopify by creating a product and turning off the Physical product setting, so no shipping is charged.
- When nothing in the cart needs shipping, checkout skips the shipping address and only collects billing details.
- For appointments, classes or rentals, you add a booking app from the Shopify App Store to handle times and capacity.
- Shopify fits best when services sit next to products. A business that only takes bookings may be better served by a dedicated booking tool.

- What you need
- A Shopify store
Yes, you can sell services on Shopify. You create the service as a product, turn off the Physical product setting in its Shipping section, and Shopify skips shipping at checkout. For anything with a date or time slot, such as consultations, classes or repairs, you add a booking app so customers pick a slot when they pay.
I've set up Shopify stores that sell installation, design consultations, workshops and gift experiences next to physical products. The steps below follow Shopify's Help Center, checked on 7 November 2026.
What kinds of services work
| Service type | Example | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-price service | Logo design, store audit | A product with shipping off |
| Appointment | Consultation, fitting | A booking app |
| Class or event | Workshop, tasting | A booking app with capacity |
| Add-on to a product | Installation, engraving | A variant or add-on product |
| Recurring service | Monthly coaching | A subscription app |
| Deposit | Custom order deposit | A product priced at the deposit |
How to set up a service product
- Create the product. Go to
Products, clickAdd product, and give it a clear title, a description of what's included, and the price. - Turn off shipping. In the
Shippingsection, switch offPhysical product. If the service has variants, such as 30 or 60 minutes, do this on each variant. - Turn off inventory tracking, unless you want to cap how many you sell.
- Explain what happens next. Edit your order confirmation email in
Settings > Notificationsso customers know how and when the service will be delivered. - Place a test order. Check that checkout skips the shipping step and the confirmation email reads correctly.
To switch shipping off for many products at once, select them in Products, open the bulk editor, and turn off the Requires shipping column.
Adding bookings and appointments
Shopify doesn't have a built-in calendar, so time-based services need a booking app. Shopify's guidance is to install one from the App Store and set available times, capacity and whether bookings repeat in the app's settings. When you compare apps, check that it syncs with your own calendar, sends reminders, handles time zones and lets customers reschedule.
Tax on services and digital products
- US: whether a service is taxable depends on the state and the type of service. Check each state where you have nexus.
- UK: most services carry VAT once you're registered, at the standard rate unless a special rule applies.
- EU and the Netherlands: digital products sold to EU consumers are taxed at the customer's country rate, wherever you're based. Shopify flags this in its digital products guidance.
- Australia: GST applies to most services once you're registered.
Tax rules for services vary a lot, so confirm your setup with an accountant before launch.
When Shopify is the right tool
Shopify is a strong fit when you sell services alongside products, such as a furniture store selling assembly or a coffee roaster selling tastings. One checkout, one customer list and one set of reports beats running two systems. If your business is only appointments with no products, a dedicated booking platform is often simpler and cheaper, and I'd tell you that before building on Shopify.
What to do next
- Write the service page like a product page, with what's included, how long it takes and what the customer needs to do. My guide to adding products the right way applies to services too.
- Offer recurring services as subscriptions. Setting up subscriptions on Shopify covers the options.
- Check EU tax if you sell digital services abroad, using my EU OSS VAT guide.
- Get help with the setup. I build Shopify stores that mix products and services, from $300, through my store development service.

Frequently asked questions
Can you sell services on Shopify?
Yes. Create the service as a product, turn off the Physical product setting so no shipping applies, and customers pay through the normal checkout. Add a booking app if customers need to pick a time.
How do I remove shipping for a service on Shopify?
Open the product, go to the Shipping section and turn off Physical product, then save. For many products at once, use the bulk editor and turn off Requires shipping.
Does Shopify have a booking system?
No. Shopify doesn't include a booking calendar. You add one with a booking app from the Shopify App Store, which handles times, capacity and reminders.
Will checkout ask for an address for a service?
No, if nothing in the cart needs shipping. Shopify skips the shipping address step and only collects billing information. If you need an address for an on-site visit, ask for it in the booking app or a form.
Can I sell services and products in the same order?
Yes. If the cart has a physical product, checkout collects a shipping address for that item and charges shipping as normal. The service line has no shipping cost.
Is Shopify good for a service-only business?
It works, but it isn't always the best fit. If you sell only appointments with no products, a dedicated booking platform is often simpler. Shopify shines when services sit next to products.
