Can I Take Bank Transfers on Shopify?
Yes, Shopify can take bank transfers as a manual payment method. Here is how to set it up, the limits to know, and when an instant bank payment works better.

Key takeaways
- Shopify supports bank transfers as a manual payment method, set up in
Settings > Payments. - Orders paid this way stay unpaid until you check the money has arrived and mark them as paid.
- Shopify doesn't charge third-party transaction fees on manual payments.
- Shopify Payments offers instant bank payments in some countries, such as iDEAL | Wero in the Netherlands and Bancontact in Belgium. In the US, ACH Direct Debit is for B2B orders only.
- Who it is for
- Stores selling B2B or high-ticket

- What you need
- Your bank details and admin access
Yes, you can take bank transfers on Shopify. You add them as a manual payment method: the customer places the order, sees your bank details and instructions, and the order stays unpaid until you confirm the money has arrived and mark it as paid. For Dutch and Belgian shoppers, Shopify Payments also offers instant bank payments through iDEAL | Wero and Bancontact, which confirm payment automatically.
I set up payments on most of the stores I build, and bank transfers come up most for B2B buyers, high-ticket orders and customers who avoid cards. Everything below was checked on the Shopify Help Center on 7 November 2026.
How to set up a bank transfer option
- Open payments. In your Shopify admin, go to
Settings > Payments. - Pick the method. Choose a suggested method, such as Bank Deposit, or in the Manual payment methods section click Create custom payment method.
- Fill in the details. Enter a Custom payment method name, Additional details shown at checkout, and Payment instructions shown after the order. Put your bank details in the instructions and ask customers to use the order number as the payment reference.
- Activate it. Click Activate. Shopify won't let a custom name match a reserved one, such as Bank Deposit, Cash or Money Order.
What happens after the order
Shopify marks manual-payment orders as unpaid on the Orders page, with a pending payment status. When the money arrives, you open the order and mark it as paid, then fulfill it as normal. Check your bank account itself, never a screenshot the customer sends, because fake payment confirmations are a common scam.
Shopify says you aren't charged third-party transaction fees for manual payments. Your bank may still charge for incoming transfers, especially international ones, so check its fees before you offer this to overseas customers.
Your bank payment options compared
| Method | Payment confirmed | Available to |
|---|---|---|
| Manual bank transfer | When you mark it paid | Any Shopify store |
| iDEAL | Wero | Instantly, automatic | Netherlands, via Shopify Payments |
| Bancontact | Instantly, automatic | Belgium, via Shopify Payments |
| EPS, Przelewy24, Multibanco | Automatic | Austria, Poland, Portugal |
| ACH Direct Debit | Through Shopify Payments | US, B2B orders only |
| Pay-by-bank apps | Through the app | Check each App Store listing |
Shopify notes that each local method is available only when the customer is in a supported country and pays in an eligible currency. Activating one may also mean deactivating a conflicting payment gateway first.
When a bank transfer makes sense
Manual transfers add a step, and some customers never complete the payment. I use them as an extra option next to cards, never the only one. They work well for:
- Wholesale and B2B orders, where buyers pay invoices by transfer anyway. Shopify also supports payment terms for B2B or large orders, so customers can pay after receiving the goods. My Shopify B2B setup guide covers it.
- High-value orders, where card fees on a large amount add up. My guide to Shopify fees shows how those costs compare.
- Customers who don't use cards, common in markets where bank payments are the norm.
Set a rule for unpaid orders, such as a reminder after three days and cancellation after seven, so stock isn't held for buyers who never pay.
By country
- US: customers can send an ACH transfer or wire to your account through a manual method. Shopify's own ACH Direct Debit is limited to B2B orders.
- UK: Shopify Payments doesn't list a built-in bank payment method for UK shoppers, so stores use a manual transfer or a pay-by-bank app.
- Netherlands: iDEAL | Wero through Shopify Payments is the standard way Dutch shoppers pay by bank. My iDEAL guide covers the setup.
- Australia: manual transfers work, and some App Store apps offer PayTo bank payments.
What to do next
- Add the manual method with clear instructions and the order number as reference.
- Check the two limits: Shopify-managed US sales tax and multi-currency.
- Agree an internal rule for checking payments and cancelling unpaid orders. My guide on preventing fraud on Shopify covers the warning signs.
- Review your full payment mix. The guide to taking payments on Shopify walks through every option.

Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify charge fees on bank transfers?
Shopify says you aren't charged third-party transaction fees for manual payments, which include bank transfers. Your bank may still charge for receiving transfers, especially from abroad.
How do I mark a bank transfer order as paid?
Open the order in your Shopify admin once the money is in your account and mark it as paid. Then fulfill it as you would any other order.
Why can't I turn on manual payments?
One common reason is that your US sales tax is managed by Shopify. Shopify says you must set US sales tax to Self-directed before you can accept manual payments.
Can customers pay by bank instantly on Shopify?
In some countries, yes. Shopify Payments supports iDEAL | Wero in the Netherlands, Bancontact in Belgium, and other bank methods such as EPS, Przelewy24 and Multibanco, which confirm payment automatically.
Does Shopify Payments support ACH in the US?
Shopify Payments lists ACH Direct Debit for US customers on B2B orders only. For retail customers, a manual bank transfer method is the usual way to accept ACH or wire payments.
Are bank transfers safe for my store?
They can't be reversed like card chargebacks, which helps you. The risk is fake payment proof, so only mark an order as paid once you see the money in your own bank account.
