How to Accept iDEAL Payments on Shopify
iDEAL is how most Dutch shoppers expect to pay online. Here is how to add iDEAL | Wero to your Shopify store, wherever your business is based, and the settings that stop it showing.

Key takeaways
- iDEAL is the bank payment most Dutch shoppers expect at checkout. Shopify now lists it as iDEAL | Wero, and it runs through Shopify Payments.
- Netherlands-based stores get it automatically once Shopify Payments is set up. Stores based in the US, UK, Australia and other Shopify Payments countries can add it after processing 100 orders through Shopify Payments.
- It only shows to shoppers in the Netherlands paying in €, so you need the Netherlands as an active market with € enabled.
- iDEAL | Wero payments can't be charged back, but you can refund them for up to 180 days, and the processing fee isn't returned on refunds.
- Who it is for
- Stores selling to shoppers in the Netherlands
- Time needed
- 30 minutes once you are eligible
- What you need
- Shopify Payments, a Netherlands market and € enabled
If you sell to the Netherlands and your checkout only offers cards, you're asking Dutch shoppers to pay in a way many of them don't use online. iDEAL lets them pay straight from their bank app, and a Dutch checkout without it looks foreign. I build stores for Dutch brands and for sellers abroad who ship into the Netherlands, and adding iDEAL is one of the first things I check.
The setup is simple once you know which route applies to your store, and that depends mainly on where your business is based. This guide covers each route, the requirements Shopify checks, the exact settings and the order-handling rules that catch people out. Everything here comes from Shopify's Help Center as checked on 7 November 2026.
What iDEAL | Wero is and how it works at checkout
iDEAL is a direct bank transfer method. The shopper chooses iDEAL | Wero at checkout, picks their bank, is sent to their bank or app to approve the payment, and then returns to your store. No card details are entered.
For you, three things work differently from card payments:
- No chargebacks. Customers can't dispute an iDEAL | Wero payment with their bank, so they have to come to you with any problem.
- Possible pending orders. If the bank is still finalizing when the shopper returns, Shopify creates the order with a
Payment pendingstatus. - Refund window. You can refund within 180 days of the original charge. After that, you'd need to return money outside Shopify.
Three ways to accept iDEAL on Shopify
| Your situation | Route | Main condition |
|---|---|---|
| Business based in the Netherlands | Shopify Payments | Connects automatically after setup |
| Based in the US, UK or Australia | Shopify Payments | 100 orders processed first |
| Can't use Shopify Payments | Third-party provider | Shopify transaction fee applies |
The third route means connecting a payment provider such as Mollie that offers iDEAL. It works, but Shopify then charges its third-party transaction fee on those orders: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. My Shopify Payments vs Mollie comparison weighs the two in detail. For most stores that can use Shopify Payments, it is the simpler and cheaper option.
Which iDEAL route fits your store

Yes: next questionNo: use a third-party provider that offers iDEAL
- 2
Is your business based in the Netherlands?

- 3
Have you processed 100 orders through Shopify Payments?
Yes: activate iDEAL | Wero on the Payments pageNo: sell with cards and wallets until you reach 100
Whichever route you take, the Netherlands must be an active market with € enabled, or iDEAL never shows.
What Shopify checks before it turns iDEAL on
Shopify reviews eligibility regularly and emails the store owner when a store qualifies. These are the conditions it lists:
- Identity verification complete on your Shopify Payments account.
- Trustworthy business practices: a clear refund policy, accurate product descriptions, contact details that are easy to find, and compliance with Shopify's Acceptable Use Policy.
- A live store. A password-protected store doesn't qualify.
- A published legal notice, sometimes called an Impressum, with your company name, address and contact information.
- € accepted on the store, with the Netherlands as an active market.
The legal notice is the requirement I see missed most often by non-Dutch stores. Create a page with your registered company name, full address, email and phone, and link it in the footer next to your policies.
How to set up iDEAL | Wero, step by step
- Set up Shopify Payments. Complete setup and identity verification under
Settings > Payments. Netherlands-based stores can stop here for the payment method itself, because iDEAL | Wero connects automatically. - Add the Netherlands market. Go to
Marketsand make sure the Netherlands is in an active market, either on its own or inside a wider Europe market. - Enable € for that market. Open the market, click the plus icon next to
Currencyand choose € if it isn't already set. PickDynamicexchange rates to convert automatically, orManualto fix the rate. ClickDone, thenSave. - Publish your legal notice and policies. Add the company details page and check your refund policy is linked in the footer and at checkout.
- Activate iDEAL | Wero (stores outside the Netherlands). Once you've processed 100 orders through Shopify Payments, go to
Settings > Paymentsand activate iDEAL | Wero in the payment methods for Shopify Payments. - Check it shows. iDEAL | Wero only appears for a Netherlands address checking out in €. Preview your store as the Netherlands market from the
Marketspage and go to checkout with a Dutch address. - Brief your team and apps. Make sure anyone fulfilling orders, and any fulfillment or ERP app, checks that payment is complete before shipping.
Handling pending iDEAL orders
Because iDEAL is a bank transfer, a small share of orders may arrive with Payment pending while the bank finishes processing. Shopify's advice is to check the payment status before you fulfill. In practice:
- Filter your orders by payment status each morning and ship only paid orders.
- Check that automated fulfillment apps, dropshipping apps and warehouse connections don't send pending orders to be picked.
- Leave a pending order for a day before contacting the customer. Most resolve on their own.
Refunds, complaints and fees
Refund iDEAL | Wero orders from the order page as you would a card order, within 180 days. Shopify keeps the processing fee on refunded iDEAL | Wero transactions, so frequent refunds cost you money. You can see the iDEAL | Wero rate for your store by going to Settings > Payments and clicking Manage in the Shopify Payments section.
The lack of chargebacks cuts both ways. Customers can't dispute payments with their bank, so you're expected to deal with complaints yourself, and quickly. Shopify warns that repeated complaints reported to the authorities could lead to iDEAL | Wero being disabled on your account.
If your payout currency isn't €, Shopify also charges a currency conversion fee on € payments: 1.5% for US-based stores and 2% in most other Shopify Payments countries. I cover how that works in my guide to accepting multiple currencies on Shopify.
By country: what changes for your store
| Store based in | iDEAL route | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Netherlands | Automatic with Shopify Payments | Prices already in €, no conversion |
| United States | After 100 orders | 1.5% conversion fee on € sales |
| United Kingdom | After 100 orders | 2% conversion fee, EU VAT rules |
| Australia | After 100 orders | 2% conversion fee, long delivery times |
Selling into the Netherlands from outside the EU also brings import VAT and customs questions that are separate from payments. Check how your Markets duties and tax settings handle EU orders before you advertise there.
Common mistakes
- No Netherlands market. iDEAL is set up correctly but never shows, because Dutch shoppers are seeing your home currency.
- Store still password-protected. Eligibility checks fail while the store is locked.
- No legal notice. A missing company details page blocks eligibility.
- Shipping pending orders. A fulfillment app that ignores payment status can ship goods that were never paid for.
- Running a third-party iDEAL app alongside Shopify Payments. Shopify asks you to deactivate conflicting gateways first, and you'd pay a transaction fee on the third-party orders.
- Testing from outside the Netherlands. You won't see iDEAL unless the checkout has a Dutch address and €.
iDEAL setup checklist
- Shopify Payments set up and identity verification complete.
- 100 orders processed through Shopify Payments (stores outside the Netherlands).
- Netherlands in an active market with € enabled.
- Store open, not password-protected.
- Legal notice page with company name, address and contact details.
- Refund policy and contact details easy to find.
- iDEAL | Wero visible at checkout with a Dutch address.
- Fulfillment process ships paid orders only.
- Dutch language added to the market, if you can support it.
Next steps
Check your Markets settings first, because that is where most iDEAL problems start. Then look at the rest of your payment mix: Klarna and Bancontact are also popular with Dutch and Belgian shoppers, and my guide to taking payments on Shopify covers how they fit together. If you'd like me to check your store's setup for the Dutch market, the free review covers payments, checkout and translation.

Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify support iDEAL?
Yes. Shopify Payments supports iDEAL | Wero for shoppers in the Netherlands who pay in €. Netherlands-based stores get it automatically once Shopify Payments is set up, and stores in other supported countries can activate it after processing 100 orders through Shopify Payments.
Why is iDEAL not showing on my Shopify checkout?
The most common reasons are that the Netherlands isn't an active market, € isn't enabled for it, or you're testing without a Dutch address. Stores outside the Netherlands also need 100 Shopify Payments orders first, and the store must not be password-protected.
Can a US Shopify store accept iDEAL?
Yes. Shopify's US payment methods page lists iDEAL | Wero as a local method for customers in the Netherlands, available after you process at least 100 orders with Shopify Payments. A 1.5% currency conversion fee applies to € payments if your payouts are in your home currency.
Can customers file a chargeback on iDEAL payments?
No. iDEAL | Wero payments can't be disputed with the customer's bank, so customers have to contact you directly. Shopify warns that repeated complaints reported to authorities could lead to iDEAL | Wero being disabled on your account.
How long can I refund an iDEAL order on Shopify?
Up to 180 days after the original charge. The Shopify Payments processing fee isn't returned when you refund an iDEAL | Wero transaction.
Do I need Mollie to accept iDEAL on Shopify?
Not if you can use Shopify Payments. A third-party provider such as Mollie is an option for stores that can't, but Shopify then adds its transaction fee of 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.2% depending on your plan.
