Shopify Product Page Checklist: 40 Checks That Help It Sell
Work through this checklist on your best-selling product page and you will find most of what is costing you sales. Every check shows why it matters and where to fix it in Shopify.

Key takeaways
- A Shopify product page has one job: answer the questions a shopper has before they press Add to cart. This checklist covers 7 areas and 40 checks, each with the admin path where you fix it.
- Shopify accepts product images up to 5000 x 5000 px (25 megapixels) and under 20 MB, and says 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best for square images.
- Each product can have up to 3 options and 2,048 variants, so most stores never need a separate product per color.
- Shopify lets you enter up to 70 characters for a page title and recommends 60, plus about 160 characters for the meta description. Rules checked on 7 November 2026.
- Who it is for
- Store owners improving product pages that get traffic but few sales
- Time needed
- About an hour for your first product, less after that
- What you need
- Shopify admin access and your phone
When I run a CRO audit, the product page is where I spend the most time, because it's where the buying decision happens. Most stores don't lose sales on product pages because of one big mistake. They lose them through ten small ones: a price that hides the delivery cost, photos that don't show scale, a size question with no answer, an Add to cart button that drops below the fold on a phone.
This checklist is the one I work through on client stores. Keep it open next to your Shopify admin, take one product template at a time, and tick each row. Every check has a short reason and the place in Shopify where you change it. Fix your best-selling product first, because the same template usually controls every other product page. Shopify limits and settings were checked against the Shopify Help Center on 7 November 2026.
1. Title, price and offer
A shopper should understand what the product is, what it costs and what they get within three seconds of landing on the page.
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Title says what it is | Shoppers and Google both read it first | Products > [product] > Title |
| Price is easy to see near the title | Hidden prices feel like a trick | Theme editor, product information section |
| Sale price uses compare-at price | Shows the old and new price together | Products > [product] > Pricing > Compare at |
| Was/now claims are genuine | Fake reference prices break consumer rules | Your pricing records |
| Unit price shown where required | A legal requirement in some regions | Pricing > Unit price |
| Delivery cost or threshold stated | Surprise shipping is a top reason to leave | Theme text block or app block |
For a sale price to show, the compare-at price must be higher than the price, and your theme decides where it appears. Shopify's own help center notes that if your main market is outside the EEA and you sell into the EEA, compare-at prices are hidden by default for those customers because of the EU price indication rules. Before you run a sale, read my answer on the rules for was/now prices.
2. Images and video
Photos do the work a shop assistant would do in person. In audits, weak images are the most common reason a product page with good traffic doesn't convert.
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| At least 5 images per product | Front, back, detail, scale and in use | Products > [product] > Media |
| Square images at 2048 x 2048 px | Shopify says this usually displays best | Your image export settings |
| Files under 20 MB | Larger files won't upload | Your image export settings |
| One image shows scale | Stops "smaller than expected" returns | Media |
| Short video for products that move | Shows fit, texture or how it works | Media (up to 10 minutes, 1 GB) |
| Alt text on every image | Helps screen readers and image search | Media > [image] > Edit alt text |
| Variant images linked | Choosing "blue" should show blue | Variants, image per variant |
Shopify accepts images up to 5000 x 5000 px or 25 megapixels, and recommends PNG first and JPEG second. Video uploads can run up to 10 minutes and 1 GB, in .mp4, .mov or .webm. 3D models (GLB or USDZ) can be up to 500 MB. My answers on how many product photos to use and what size Shopify product images should be go into more detail.
Shopify media limits, as checked on 7 November 2026
- Best square image2048 pxMaximum is 5000 x 5000 px or 25 MP.
- Image file size20 MBFiles must be smaller than this.
- Video length10 minUp to 1 GB and 4K resolution.
- 3D model500 MBGLB or USDZ, optimized above 15 MB.
3. Description and product details
The description answers "is this right for me". Specs and care details answer "will it work". Keep them separate so shoppers can find each quickly.
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| First lines name the main benefit | Most shoppers read only the top | Products > [product] > Description |
| Specs in a scannable list or tab | Dimensions and materials get checked | Theme collapsible tabs |
| Size guide on apparel and shoes | Fit questions block the sale | Page or metafield in a tab |
| Repeating details stored in metafields | Update once, show on every template | Settings > Metafields and metaobjects |
| Product category set | Feeds filters and sales channels | Products > [product] > Category |
| No copied supplier text | Duplicate text helps no one rank | Description |
Metafields are the tidy way to add things like materials, care instructions or ingredients, because you fill in a field per product and the theme shows it in the same place every time. You can add a definition straight from a product page, in the Metafields section, or from Settings > Metafields and metaobjects. See Shopify metafields explained for examples, and how to write product descriptions that sell for the copy itself.
4. Variants and the buy box
The buy box is the area with the price, options, quantity and Add to cart button. On a phone, it should be visible without scrolling past a wall of images.
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Options use clear names | "Size" and "Color", not "Option 1" | Products > [product] > Variants |
| Colors shown as swatches | Faster to scan than a dropdown | Theme editor, variant picker |
| Sold-out variants marked | Saves a dead-end click | Inventory tracking per variant |
| Add to cart visible on a phone | Many shoppers browse on phones | Theme editor, mobile preview |
| Accelerated checkout buttons on | Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay in one tap | Theme editor, Buy buttons block |
| Delivery estimate near the button | Answers "when will it arrive" | Text block or app block |
Each product can have up to three options and up to 2,048 variants, so one product page can hold every size and color combination. To switch accelerated checkout buttons on, open the theme editor, go to the default product template, select Buy buttons and tick Show accelerated checkout buttons. If the setting is missing, your theme needs an update. My mobile CRO checklist covers the phone layout in more depth.
5. Trust and social proof
New visitors don't know you. The page has to show that real people bought this product and that buying is low risk.
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Reviews near the title and below the fold | The star rating gets seen, the text gets read | Reviews app block in theme editor |
| Photo reviews where possible | Real photos beat studio shots for trust | Reviews app settings |
| Returns summary in one line | Lowers the risk of buying | Text block linking your policy |
| Policies published | Linked in the checkout footer | Settings > Policies |
| Contact option on the page | A visible way to ask a question | Theme footer or chat app |
| Answers to common questions | Removes the last doubts before buying | Collapsible FAQ block |
Don't fill the page with badges. One clear returns line and genuine reviews do more than a row of payment icons. For collecting your first reviews and placing them well, read how to use reviews and social proof.
6. Search engine listing
A product page that converts well still needs to be found. These checks take two minutes per product.
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Page title around 60 characters | Shopify allows 70 and recommends 60 | Search engine listing section |
| Meta description about 160 characters | Shopify's recommended length | Search engine listing section |
| Short, readable URL handle | Clean links get clicked and shared | Search engine listing, URL handle |
| Keywords in image alt text | Shopify suggests using page keywords | Edit alt text |
| Product is Active and published | Draft products don't appear | Status and Publishing sections |
The search engine listing sits near the bottom of each product page in the admin. Click the pencil icon to edit the page title, meta description and URL handle. Shopify warns against changing the handle often, because the product can drop out of search results while Google catches up. The full method is in my guide to optimizing Shopify product pages for SEO.
7. Speed and measurement
A slow page loses shoppers before they see your photos. And without data, you're guessing which change helped.
| Check | Why it matters | Where in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Page loads quickly on a phone | Slow pages lose visitors | Speed checker |
| Unused app code removed | Old apps leave scripts behind | Online Store > Edit code |
| Product page conversion tracked | Shows which pages leak | Analytics > Reports |
| One change tested at a time | Otherwise you can't tell what worked | A/B testing app |
If you change several things at once and sales rise, you won't know which change did it. My guide to A/B testing on Shopify explains how to test properly on a small store.
Common misses
- Fixing one product but not the template. Most changes belong in the product template, so every product benefits.
- Judging the page on desktop. Check it on your own phone, on mobile data, before you sign off.
- Hiding delivery costs until checkout. State the cost or the free delivery threshold on the product page.
- Five apps doing one job. Reviews, badges, upsells and timers from different apps slow the page and clash visually.
- Size and fit questions left unanswered. If customers email the same question twice, the answer belongs on the page.
Before you sign off a product page
| Area | Signed off when | Quick test |
|---|---|---|
| Offer | Price, delivery and returns visible | Read it on a phone in 5 seconds |
| Images | 5+ images, scale shown, alt text | Swipe through as a shopper |
| Details | Specs, size guide, care in tabs | Find the size guide in 2 taps |
| Buy box | Add to cart visible, variants clear | Pick a variant and add to cart |
| Trust | Reviews and policies linked | Find the returns policy |
| SEO | Title, description and handle set | Check the search listing preview |
| Speed | Page feels quick on mobile data | Run the speed checker |

Frequently asked questions
What should a Shopify product page include?
A clear title, a visible price with the delivery cost or threshold, at least five good images, a benefit-led description, specs and a size guide where relevant, clear variant options, an Add to cart button visible on a phone, reviews and a one-line returns summary. The checklist above covers each one.
What size should Shopify product images be?
Shopify says 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best for square product images. Images can be up to 5000 x 5000 px or 25 megapixels, and must be smaller than 20 MB. PNG is Shopify's first choice, followed by JPEG.
How many variants can a Shopify product have?
Each product can have up to three options, such as size, color and material, and up to 2,048 variants. For more options than that, you need an app or a theme code change, and Shopify Plus stores can use the Combined Listings app.
How long should a product page title and meta description be?
Shopify lets you enter up to 70 characters for the page title and recommends keeping it to 60. For the meta description, Shopify recommends about 160 characters. Edit both in the search engine listing section of each product.
How do I add Shop Pay and Apple Pay buttons to product pages?
Open the theme editor, go to your product template, select the Buy buttons block and tick Show accelerated checkout buttons. The buttons that appear depend on the payment methods you have switched on. If the setting is missing, update your theme.
