Shopify for bakeries and cake makers

I build Shopify bakery websites that take custom cake orders, deposits and collection slots without a long back-and-forth by message, and show allergen information the way the rules expect. You get a fixed quote after a free review.

Bakery orders run on the calendar

A bakery website is really a booking system with photos. Bread, pastries and celebration cakes have a shelf life measured in days, so almost every order comes with a date, a collection or delivery slot and a limit on how far it can travel. A wedding cake for 14 June needs a deposit, a flavor, a tier count and a message, and nobody should be able to order it for tomorrow. Most bakery sites I see push all of that into Instagram messages, which is where orders get lost.

On Shopify I build that logic into the product page. Cake sizes and flavors are variants, with the price rising as the cake gets bigger. Inscriptions, colors and reference photos are custom fields on the product form, saved to the order as line item properties, so they arrive with the order rather than in a separate chat. A date-picker app enforces your notice period, blocks the days you're closed and caps how many cakes you take on a busy Saturday. Big custom cakes can take a deposit through a preorder or deposit app, with the balance collected before the event.

Fresh goods rarely travel far, so delivery is usually local. Shopify's local delivery covers addresses within a set distance or chosen postal codes, and local pickup handles collection from your shop or kitchen. Products that do travel, such as cookies, brownies or cake jars, get their own shipping profile, so a customer can't have a cream cake posted across the country.

Allergens come up on almost every order. In the UK, for example, information on the 14 allergens has to be given before an online purchase and again at delivery, and home bakers selling online register with their council like any other food business. I put allergen details as text on each product and on the packing slip. The table below sets out the main rules by country, as checked on 7 November 2026.

Where bakery websites lose orders

  • Custom cake details arrive by message and get lost between chats.
  • Customers can order for tomorrow when you need five days' notice.
  • Saturday gets overbooked because nothing caps the number of cakes.
  • Fresh cakes show nationwide shipping at checkout.
  • Allergen information is missing or only given on request.

Custom cake order pages

Size and flavor variants plus fields for inscriptions, colors and reference photos, saved on the order as line item properties.

Lead times and daily caps

A date-picker app with your notice period, closed days and a daily limit, so busy days close themselves.

Collection and local delivery

Shopify local pickup and local delivery by distance or postal code, with time slots from the date app.

A range that ships

A separate shipping profile for cookies, brownies or jars that travel, so fresh cakes stay local.

Deposits and preorders

Allergen details on every product

Ingredients and allergens stored as metafields, shown on the product page and printed on packing slips.

Why bakers work with me

01

Fewer messages, cleaner orders

Every detail you normally chase by message becomes a field on the order, so you bake from the order sheet, not a chat history.

02

Built for phones first

Many cake orders start after someone sees your work on social media, so I build and test the whole order flow on small screens first.

How a bakery website build works

  1. 1

    Free review

I look at your menu, lead times, delivery area and how orders reach you now, then send three points and a fixed quote.

  2. 2

    Order flow

Variants, custom fields, date rules and daily caps are set up and tested with sample orders for cakes, bread and boxes.

  3. 3

    Design and delivery

Theme, photos, local delivery, pickup, shipping profiles and notification emails are built and checked on phones.

  4. 4

    Launch

The site goes live, and I adjust lead times and caps over the first weeks to match how your kitchen really runs.

Is this the right fit

A good fit

  • You take custom or celebration cake orders and want them in one place.
  • You sell bread, pastries or boxes for local collection or delivery.
  • You also ship a few products that travel well.
  • You want deposits and lead times enforced by the site, not by you.

Not the right fit

  • You haven't registered your food business yet: in most places that comes first.
  • You only want a menu page with a phone number and no online orders.
  • You need a production planner for supermarket supply contracts.

Your questions, answered.

What bakeries and cake makers brands ask before starting a Shopify project.

Ask me about your store
Can a bakery take custom cake orders on Shopify?

Yes. Sizes and flavors become variants with their own prices, and inscriptions, colors and reference photos become fields on the product page that save to the order. Your kitchen gets everything on one order instead of spread across messages.

Can customers pick a collection or delivery date?

Yes, with a date-picker app. Shopify's built-in local delivery and pickup decide where the order goes, and the app adds the date and time slot, your notice period, closed days and a daily cap on orders.

Can I take deposits for wedding cakes?

Yes. A preorder or deposit app lets customers pay part of the price now and the rest later, with the balance due date set by you. That keeps big orders committed without asking for the full amount months ahead.

Can I ship cakes nationwide?

Only the products that travel well. I set fresh cakes to local delivery and pickup only, and give cookies, brownies or cake jars a separate shipping profile, so a cream cake can't be ordered for delivery 300 miles away.

I bake from home. Can I still sell online?

In many places, yes, with conditions. In the UK, home bakers register with their council like any food business. In US states with cottage food laws the rules vary: Texas, for example, requires online orders to be delivered in person by the baker, a household member or an employee. Check with your local authority or an adviser for your exact situation.

How much does a bakery website cost?

Store design and development starts from $300. Custom cake forms, date rules and deposits add to the scope, so every bakery gets a fixed quote after a free review.

Do I need to show allergens on my website?

In the UK and EU, allergen information for food sold online must be available before purchase and again at delivery, whether the food is packaged or not. Other markets set rules for labels and for unpackaged food. I show allergens as text on every product either way, because customers ask for it.
