Overview
What Shopify won't maintain for you
Shopify runs the platform. Every plan includes hosting and a free SSL certificate, and Shopify states that it's certified Level 1 PCI DSS compliant, as checked on 7 November 2026. There are no servers to patch and no plugin security updates to chase. What Shopify doesn't look after is your theme, your apps, and the content and settings you add. That's where stores slowly drift.
Theme feature updates don't install themselves. Shopify's automated theme updates only fix bugs and security issues. New versions have to be added to your drafts by hand, and code edits carry over only if they don't conflict with the update. Uploaded themes don't get automatic updates at all. Apps add their own drift: Shopify notes that some apps add theme code that isn't removed when you uninstall them, and charges billed outside Shopify carry on until you cancel them with the developer. Over a year, that adds up to slower pages and bills nobody can explain. The guide to auditing and removing unused apps shows how much can pile up.
On the plan, I check your theme version, review apps and remove what you don't use along with its leftover code, run speed checks on key pages, test checkout and forms, fix what's broken and make the small changes you send me. Before any theme work, I duplicate the theme, because Shopify's Timeline restores one file at a time and keeps no history for CSS, JavaScript or image files. Test orders go through test mode at a quiet time, since live orders can't be placed while it's on.
Plans start from $150 a month, with a fixed monthly quote in writing after a free review, sized to how much your store changes. The Shopify maintenance cost guide covers what drives that. Bigger one-off jobs are quoted separately: speed optimisation starts from $100 and store design and development starts from $300.
Signs you need this
- Your theme is several versions behind and you're nervous about updating it.
- You pay for apps nobody remembers installing.
- Your pages have got slower since launch.
- Small fixes wait for weeks because you have no regular developer.
- Something broke after an app or theme change and nobody knows why.
What the service includes
Theme updates
New theme versions added as a draft, your code edits checked and reapplied, then published after testing.
Monthly app audit
Installed apps reviewed, unused ones removed along with any code they left in the theme, and app charges listed.
Speed checks
Home, collection and product pages checked each month, with fixes for new slowdowns such as oversized images or added scripts.
Checkout and flow tests
Checkout, forms and order emails tested after significant changes, with test orders placed at quiet times.
Fixes and small changes
Bugs fixed and small content or layout changes made, within the scope agreed in your quote.
Backup before every change
A fresh theme duplicate before any theme work, so a change can be reversed by republishing the copy.

How it works
How it works
- 1
Free review and fixed quote
I look at your theme, apps and how often you change things, then send a fixed monthly quote in writing.
- 2
Baseline audit
In the first month I record your theme version, apps, speed scores and key settings, and fix anything urgent.
- 3
Monthly work
Updates, app checks, speed checks, tests, fixes and your small change requests, all on a duplicated theme first.
- 4
Monthly report
You get a short report on what was checked, what changed and anything I recommend doing next.
Is it a fit?
Is a monthly plan right for you
A good fit
- Your store is live, selling and changing regularly.
- You use several apps and a customised theme.
- You want one person accountable for keeping the store healthy.
- You'd rather have a fixed monthly cost than find a developer for every fix.
- You sell in the UK, EU, US or Australia and want settings checked as you grow.
Not the right fit
- Your store is brand new and rarely changes, so a one-off check after launch may be enough.
- You need a rebuild or a big new feature, which is a separate project with its own quote.
- You want someone to run your ads. I don't offer ad management.
- Your store isn't on Shopify yet, so a migration comes first.
Comparison
Without a plan vs with one
| Aspect | Without a plan | On a monthly plan |
|---|---|---|
| Theme version | Falls behind | Checked monthly, updated after tests |
| Apps | Pile up, some unused | Reviewed and pruned monthly |
| Leftover app code | Stays in the theme | Removed with the app |
| Speed | Checked when sales dip | Checked every month |
| Fixes | Find a developer each time | Sent to me, handled in scope |
| Backups | Made now and then | Duplicate before every change |

FAQ
Your questions, answered.
What store owners ask before starting this kind of project.
Ask me about your storeHow much do Shopify maintenance services cost?
Plans start from $150 a month. The exact monthly fee depends on the size of your store, how many apps and customisations it has, and how often you need changes. I review your store for free and send a fixed monthly quote in writing.
Doesn't Shopify maintain my store already?
Shopify maintains the platform: hosting, SSL and PCI DSS compliance are included. Your theme, apps, content and settings are yours to look after, and that's what the plan covers.
Will you update my theme automatically?
Shopify only applies automated updates for bugs and security fixes. Feature updates have to be added as a draft, so I add the new version, reapply any code edits that didn't carry over, test it and then publish it.
What counts as a small change?
The quote lists what's included each month, such as content edits, small layout tweaks and bug fixes. Bigger jobs are quoted separately, for example speed optimisation, which starts from $100.
How do you access my store?
Through a collaborator account that you approve with a 4-digit request code. It doesn't count towards your store's user limit, and you can change its permissions or remove it at any time.
Can you look after a store another developer built?
Yes. The first month's baseline audit records what's in the theme and which apps are installed, so I know exactly what I'm maintaining before I change anything.
Do you work with stores in other countries?
Yes. I work with clients in the UK, the Netherlands, the US and Australia, and monthly checks include the tax and shipping settings for each market you sell in.
What if something breaks between monthly checks?
Send it to me straight away. Fixes within the plan's scope are handled as part of it, and the quote sets out how urgent problems are dealt with.
