Does It Matter If Your Developer Is a Shopify Partner?

Partner status alone proves little, but the tier tells you more. Here is what the program and tiers mean, the 2027 change, and what to check instead.

Card summarising Shopify Partner status: anyone can join, tiers show a track record, new tiers start in 2027, and a badge alone does not prove quality
Use the tier as a filter, then judge the work itself.

Key takeaways

  • Anyone who builds for Shopify can join the Partner Program, and every partner starts on the Registered tier with no minimum, so "Shopify Partner" on its own proves little.
  • Higher tiers do mean something: they are based on the sales and number of stores a partner has launched or transferred to merchants.
  • Shopify is changing tiers. Select, Plus and Premier retire on 1 January 2027 and are replaced by Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond.
  • Only partners at Select tier or above can be listed in the Partner Directory today, and Silver or above from 2027.

A shortlist of developers

It matters a little that your developer is a Shopify Partner, and it matters more which tier they hold. Being a partner is practical, because collaborator access to your store needs a Partner login, but joining the program has no experience threshold. A tier such as Select, or Silver from 2027, shows a track record of stores launched on Shopify, which is useful evidence but no substitute for checking their work.

Disclosure: I am a Shopify Select Partner, so I have an interest in this question. Rules below come from Shopify's Partner pages and help center, as checked on 7 November 2026.

What a Shopify Partner is

The Shopify Partner Program is for people who build apps, themes, storefronts or services for Shopify merchants. Shopify says it has more than 100,000 partners. When someone joins, they start on the Registered tier after accepting the Partner Program Agreement. That gives them partner tools, including the ability to request collaborator access to client stores, but it doesn't involve any review of their skills.

What the tiers mean

Tiers are where the signal is. From 1 January 2027, Shopify sets them by attributed GMV, meaning sales from stores the partner launched or transferred to merchants, and by the number of those stores:

Tier from 2027Attributed salesAttributed stores
RegisteredNo minimumNo minimum
Silver$25K over 1 year1
Gold$5M over 4 years5
Platinum$50M over 4 years20
Diamond$500M over 4 years25

Until then, the current tiers are Select, Plus, Premier and Platinum, and the Partner Directory filters by them. When the change happens, Select, Plus and Premier retire and tiers update daily. Shopify says that once a partner reaches a tier, they keep it for at least six months.

What tiers don't measure: tiers track sales from stores a partner launched, not code quality, communication or how well they handle CRO or speed work. A small specialist can do excellent work and hold a modest tier, and a high-volume agency can still hand you a junior developer.

The Partner Directory

The Shopify Partner Directory lists partners by service, location, price and tier, and shows reviews and work samples. Partners at Select tier or above are invited to join it, and from 1 January 2027 the threshold becomes Silver. A Registered partner is not eligible. Being listed there is a reasonable sign that a partner has launched real stores, and its reviews and work samples are worth reading before you shortlist anyone.

What to check instead of the badge

  • Live stores: ask for three stores they built and look at them on your phone.
  • Reviews: read reviews in the Partner Directory or on marketplaces, including the negative ones.
  • Process: ask how they work on a duplicate theme, test and hand over.
  • Access: a real partner requests collaborator access and never asks for your password. See how to give a developer safe access.
  • Quote: a fixed quote with a clear scope beats an open hourly rate.

My list of questions to ask before hiring a Shopify developer goes into each of these.

By country

The Partner Program and tiers work the same in the US, UK, EU and Australia. The directory lets you filter by location, which can help with time zones and local knowledge such as VAT, GST or Royal Mail and Australia Post setups. Location matters less than whether the developer knows your market's rules.

What to do next

Use the tier as a first filter, then judge the work. For costs, see what a Shopify developer costs, and for the trade-offs, freelancer vs agency. If you'd like a second opinion on a quote you've received, send it to me with your store.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Shopify Partner?

A person or company in Shopify's Partner Program, which is for those who build apps, themes, storefronts or services for merchants. Shopify says it has more than 100,000 partners.

What are the Shopify Partner tiers?

Today the directory shows Select, Plus, Premier and Platinum. From 1 January 2027, tiers become Registered, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond, based on attributed sales and the number of stores launched.

Is a certified Shopify Partner better?

A higher tier shows a track record of launching stores on Shopify. It doesn't measure code quality or communication, so still check live work and reviews.

How do I find a Shopify Partner?

Use the Shopify Partner Directory, which filters by service, location, price and tier. Only partners at Select tier or above are listed, or Silver or above from 2027.

Does a developer need to be a Shopify Partner to work on my store?

Collaborator access, the safe way to let a developer in, is requested through a Shopify Partner login. A staff account is the alternative, but it uses a paid seat.

Is it free to become a Shopify Partner?

Shopify's pages I checked don't state a joining fee. Every partner starts on the Registered tier after accepting the Partner Program Agreement.
