Overview
Subscriptions are more than an app
Shopify has its own Shopify Subscriptions app, listed as free on the Shopify App Store as checked on 7 November 2026. It creates auto-billed plans that renew weekly, monthly or yearly, with percentage, fixed-amount and buy X get Y discounts. Customers can skip, pause, resume or cancel from their account, and update their payment method and address. Third-party subscription apps on the App Store also plug into Shopify, and suit stores that need features the free app doesn't have.
The rules matter before you choose an app. Subscriptions need a supported payment gateway: Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen or Stripe, with the last two open only to some merchants. Shopify warns that local, manual or non-card payment methods might not be available for subscriptions, which matters in the Netherlands, where many shoppers pay with iDEAL. Bundles don't work with the Shopify Subscriptions app, discounts from function-based apps apply only to the first payment by default, and uninstalling a subscription app deletes its subscription data after 48 hours, apart from contracts and payment details.
Then there's keeping subscribers. Shopify bills renewals the day after the subscription is due, at 10:00 am store time, and checkout always shows a subscription disclosure. I make sure the product page explains the plan as clearly as checkout does, so nobody feels caught out, and that skipping or pausing is easy to find without hiding the cancel option. The subscriptions setup guide covers the admin steps, and which subscription app to use compares the options.
If you'd rather have it built and tested, the work starts from $200, with a fixed quote in writing after a free review. For stores already selling subscriptions, the subscribe flow can also be reviewed as part of Shopify CRO work.
Signs you need this
- Customers reorder the same products every few weeks, by hand.
- You run subscriptions on another app and pay for features you don't use, or lack ones you need.
- Subscribers cancel because skipping or changing a delivery is hard to find.
- Renewal payments fail and you only notice when a customer gets in touch.
- Your product pages don't explain the subscription price, frequency or terms clearly.

Benefits
Why set up subscriptions with me
Limits checked before launch
Payment gateway, bundles, discounts and local payment methods are checked during the free review, so a limit doesn't appear after launch.
Built for clarity
I also run conversion work, so the subscribe and manage flows are designed to be clear, which is the part most setups skip.

Is it a fit?
Is this service right for you
A good fit
- You sell consumables such as coffee, supplements, skincare or pet food.
- Your store uses Shopify Payments or another supported gateway.
- You want subscribers to manage their own plans without emailing you.
- You're moving from another subscription app and can't afford to lose contracts.
- You want a clear, honest subscribe offer rather than a hard sell.
Not the right fit
- Most of your customers pay with methods that can't be used for recurring billing.
- You sell one-off or seasonal products that people rarely reorder.
- You rely on product bundles and want to stay on the Shopify Subscriptions app, since the two aren't compatible.

FAQ
Your questions, answered.
What store owners ask before starting this kind of project.
Ask me about your storeIs the Shopify Subscriptions app free?
Yes. The Shopify App Store lists it as free, as checked on 7 November 2026. Normal payment processing still applies, and third-party transaction fees apply if you bill through PayPal Express without Shopify Payments activated.
How much does subscription setup cost?
It starts from $200. The exact price depends on the app, how many products and plans you need, the design work, and whether subscribers move from another app. I review your store for free and send a fixed quote, in writing.
Which payment gateways work with Shopify subscriptions?
Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen and Stripe, depending on your region. Adyen needs an existing approval and Stripe is open only to select merchants. Local, manual or non-card methods might not be available for subscriptions.
Should I use Shopify Subscriptions or another app?
The free app covers recurring plans, discounts, self-service and reporting. If you need bundles, which it doesn't support, or other features it lacks, a third-party app may suit you better. I compare them against your products before recommending one.
Can I move subscribers from another app without losing them?
Shopify Subscriptions supports transferring existing subscription contracts. I keep the old app installed until every contract is checked, because uninstalling a subscription app deletes its subscription data after 48 hours, apart from contracts and payment details.
Can I sell subscriptions in my shop as well as online?
Yes. Subscriptions work on Shopify POS as well as the online store, but Shopify's developer docs say subscriptions on POS require Shopify Payments.
When are subscribers charged?
Shopify bills subscribers the day after the subscription is due, at 10:00 am in your store's local time. Checkout always shows a subscription disclosure, which you can't remove.
Can you build custom subscription features?
Yes. Shopify's subscription APIs cover selling plans, subscription contracts and stored payment methods, so custom features or integrations can be built as an app. That work is scoped into the same fixed quote.
