Overview
Customise without breaking the store
Most theme changes happen in one of two places. The theme editor handles settings, sections and blocks, the reusable modules Shopify themes are built from. Anything the editor can't do needs code: Liquid, CSS and JavaScript. Code is where stores break, and Shopify's own help page on editing theme code, as checked on 7 November 2026, explains why.
If your code changes conflict with a theme update, Shopify says all of them are removed in the updated copy. The Timeline view restores one file at a time, it can't recover deleted files, and asset files such as CSS, JavaScript, images and fonts have no Timeline history at all. So a careless edit to a stylesheet on the live theme can't simply be rolled back. You can read more on editing theme code safely.
My process avoids all of that. I duplicate your theme first, build every change on the copy, check it on phone and desktop, and publish only when you've approved it. Your store keeps selling on the original the whole time. A store can hold 20 themes, so I tidy old copies if the library is full. Where I can, I build new features as sections and blocks with settings, so you can move and edit them in the theme editor instead of calling a developer. Every file I touch goes into a change log, which turns the next theme update into a short job. If you work with other developers, the GitHub integration records each change as a commit.
Customisation starts from $150, with a fixed quote in writing after a free review. If the goal of the changes is more sales, Shopify CRO starts from $500, and a full redesign falls under store design and development, which starts from $300.

What store owners ask before starting this kind of project.

It starts from $150. The exact price depends on how many changes you need and how complex they are. I review your theme for free and send a fixed quote in writing. If the changes are aimed at conversion, my CRO service starts from $500.
Will customising my theme stop me getting theme updates?
Not if it's done carefully. Shopify copies theme editor changes into an updated theme, and keeps code edits if they don't conflict with the update. If they do conflict, they're removed from the updated copy, so my change log lets me reapply them quickly.
Can you customise a theme bought outside the Theme Store?
Yes. Bear in mind that Shopify only offers theme updates for themes installed from the Theme Store, so updates for an outside theme depend on its developer.
Will my store go offline while you work?
No. I work on a duplicate of your theme, and the live store keeps selling until you approve the copy and it's published.
Can I still edit things myself afterwards?
Yes. I build new features as sections and blocks with settings wherever possible, so you can change text, images and order in the theme editor without touching code.
Do I need to give you my password?
No. You give me a 4-digit collaborator request code and approve my access with the permissions you choose. You can remove the access at any time.
Can you fix changes another developer made?
Yes. I compare the current code with the theme's original files to find what was changed, then fix or rebuild it properly and record it in the change log.
Should I customise my theme or get a custom one built?
Customising is usually the cheaper option when your theme's structure suits your products. A custom theme makes sense when it doesn't. I'll recommend one or the other in the free review.
