How Do I Set Up Click and Collect on Shopify?
Shopify calls click and collect local pickup, and you turn it on per location in your shipping settings. Here are the exact steps and the settings worth getting right.

Key takeaways
- Click and collect is called Pickup in store, or local pickup, in Shopify. You turn it on under
Settings > Shipping and delivery. - You need at least one location that fulfills online orders, and your store must use the latest version of checkout.
- Each location gets its own expected pickup time and pickup instructions, which go in the Ready for pickup email.
- Shopify lists no plan requirement or extra fee for pickup. You mark orders Ready for pickup, then Picked up, from the order page.
- Who it is for
- Stores with local customers
- Time needed
- 4 minutes to read
- What you need
- A location with stock
To set up click and collect on Shopify, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery, click Pickup in store under Additional delivery methods, choose a location and turn on "Let customers pick up orders directly at this location". Then set the expected pickup time, add pickup instructions and save. Customers see a pickup option at checkout for that location straight away.
I set up pickup for shops, studios and warehouses that let local customers collect. The steps below follow Shopify's Help Center, checked on 7 November 2026.
Before you start
- A location that fulfills online orders. Check under
Settings > Locationsthat the address is right and the location is set to fulfill online orders. - Stock at that location. Assign inventory to the location so pickup orders can be fulfilled from it, or set up store transfers from another location.
- The current checkout. Shopify requires the latest checkout version for pickup.
How to turn on local pickup
- Open delivery settings. In your admin, go to
Settings > Shipping and delivery. - Choose Pickup in store. In the
Additional delivery methodssection, clickPickup in store. - Pick a location. Click the location customers will collect from.
- Turn it on. In
Location status, turn on "Let customers pick up orders directly at this location". - Set the pickup time. Under
Expected pickup date, choose how long orders usually take to be ready. Customers see this at checkout. - Write pickup instructions. In the
Ready for pickup notificationsection, add where to go, opening hours and what to bring. - Check the preview and save. Use
Checkout preview, then clickSave. Repeat for each pickup location.
The settings that matter
| Setting | What it does | My advice |
|---|---|---|
| Expected pickup date | Shown at checkout | Promise what you can always hit |
| Pickup instructions | Sent when ready | Hours, entrance, ID needed |
| Store transfers | Moves stock between locations | Set a longer pickup time for them |
| Transfer exclusions | Blocks transfers by collection | Exclude bulky or fragile items |
Settings > Notifications. Keep the instructions in one place so customers don't get two versions.Handling pickup orders day to day
- Prepare the order. Open it from
Orders. If items come from another location, clickTransfer to pickup locationfirst. - Mark it ready. Click
Ready for pickup, thenMark as ready for pickup. Shopify emails the customer with your instructions. - Hand it over. When the customer collects, click
Mark as picked up. You can send an optional picked-up confirmation.
Orders from the Facebook and Instagram sales channel don't send the Ready for pickup email, so contact those customers directly.
Mistakes I see often
- An optimistic pickup time. If checkout says "usually ready in 2 hours" and orders take a day, customers turn up to nothing. Set the time you hit on your busiest day.
- Vague instructions. "Collect from the shop" isn't enough for a warehouse or a studio above another business. Give the entrance, hours and a phone number.
- No stock at the pickup location. Pickup can't be fulfilled from a location with no inventory, so customers either can't choose it or wait for a transfer.
- Forgetting to mark orders picked up. Unfulfilled pickup orders clutter your Orders list and your reports.
By country
- UK: shoppers know it as click and collect. Use that phrase on product pages and in your FAQ, even though Shopify's admin calls it pickup.
- US: local pickup and curbside pickup are the familiar terms. Mention parking or curbside handover in your instructions if you offer it.
- Netherlands: "afhalen" is the common word. Many Dutch shoppers also expect parcel pickup points, which come from carriers such as PostNL rather than Shopify's local pickup.
- Australia: click and collect is the usual term, as in the UK.
- US Shopify Protect users: orders with in-store pickup aren't eligible for Shopify Protect's fraud chargeback cover.
What to do next
- Place a test order with pickup and walk through ready and picked up, so staff know the flow.
- Add local delivery too. My guide to setting up local delivery on Shopify covers delivery zones and fees.
- Review your rates. Setting up shipping rates and zones helps pickup sit sensibly next to paid shipping.
- Selling in person as well? See whether you need a shop to use Shopify POS.

Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify offer click and collect?
Yes. Shopify calls it Pickup in store, or local pickup. You turn it on for each location under Settings > Shipping and delivery, and it's included on every plan.
How do I set up local pickup on Shopify?
Go to Settings > Shipping and delivery, click Pickup in store, choose a location and turn on pickup for it. Set the expected pickup time and pickup instructions, then save.
How do customers know their order is ready?
When you click Ready for pickup on the order, Shopify sends the Ready for pickup email with your instructions. You can view or resend it from the order timeline.
Can I offer pickup from more than one location?
Yes. Repeat the setup for each location that fulfills online orders. With store transfers, you can also move stock to the pickup location and set a separate processing time for those orders.
Is local pickup free for customers?
Shopify's pickup setup covers the pickup time and instructions, with no fee setting in the steps, so pickup shows as a free option at checkout. It is one of the easiest ways to save local customers a shipping cost.
Why isn't pickup showing at checkout?
Check that the location fulfills online orders, has stock of the items in the cart, and has pickup turned on. Your store also needs the latest version of checkout.
