What Budget Do You Need for Google Ads?
Google sets no minimum, so your budget should come from your margins and the data Google's bidding needs. Here's the formula, with examples.

Key takeaways
- Google's help page on daily budgets lists no minimum, so the right Google Ads budget comes from your own numbers.
- Start from your break-even cost per sale and the data Google's bidding needs: about 15 conversions in 30 days for target ROAS on Search and Shopping.
- A campaign can spend up to twice its average daily budget on one day, but monthly spend stays within about 30.4 times that budget.
- For most Shopify stores, a Shopping or Performance Max campaign fed by the Google & YouTube channel is the place to start.

- What you need
- Your margin per product
There's no fixed Google Ads budget you need; Google doesn't publish a minimum on its daily budget help page. A sensible starting budget is your break-even cost per sale multiplied by about 15, because Google says target ROAS bidding on Search and Shopping needs roughly 15 conversions in 30 days. A store that can afford $30 per sale would plan around $450 a month, or about $15 a day.
I don't run Google Ads accounts. I'm a Shopify developer and CRO specialist, and I see the budget question from the store side, where those clicks either convert or don't. The Google facts below were checked on its help center on 7 November 2026.
How Google Ads budgets work
Google Ads daily budget rules
- Single dayUp to 2xA campaign may spend up to twice its average daily budget on busy days.
- Monthly limit30.4xMonthly spend stays within about 30.4 times the daily budget.
- Bidding data~15Conversions in 30 days for target ROAS on Search and Shopping.
You set an average daily budget per campaign. Google may overspend on a strong day and underspend on a quiet one, but you won't be billed more than your monthly limit. You can also set a total budget for a fixed-date campaign, such as a sale.
How to work out your budget
- Find your break-even cost per sale. Price minus product cost, shipping and payment fees. That's the most you can pay for an order without losing money.
- Multiply by the conversions bidding needs. Around 15 a month gives target ROAS enough data. Fewer can still work with simpler bidding, but results are noisier.
- Divide by 30.4. That gives the average daily budget to enter.
| Break-even per sale | Monthly budget | Daily budget |
|---|---|---|
| $20 | $300 | About $10 |
| $40 | $600 | About $20 |
| $60 | $900 | About $30 |
| $80 | $1,200 | About $40 |
These are illustrative figures from the formula above, not benchmarks. Your real cost per sale will only show once the campaign has run. Use my profit margin calculator to find your break-even number.
Where to put a small budget
For a Shopify store, I'd look at product-led campaigns first. The Google & YouTube channel syncs your products to Merchant Center, and from there a Shopping or Performance Max campaign shows your products with image and price. My guides to Google Shopping strategy and Performance Max for ecommerce cover the setup. If you're unsure whether Shopping suits your products, read are Google Shopping ads worth it for small stores.
A budget spread across five campaigns gives each one too little data. One or two campaigns with enough budget to reach the conversion threshold usually learn faster. Google's own help center makes a similar point: fewer, larger campaigns that get more conversions tend to perform better.
Get tracking right before you spend
Bidding learns from the conversions you report. Connect Google Analytics and conversion tracking through the Google & YouTube app, and remove legacy Google tags pasted into your theme, because Google warns that duplicate tags double-count conversions. Then place a test order and check the value.
US, UK, EU and Australia
The formula works in any currency. Two local details change the inputs: UK, EU and Australian prices usually include VAT or GST, so use the price without tax when you calculate break-even. US prices are shown before sales tax.
What to do next
- Calculate break-even for your best sellers.
- Set one campaign with a budget that can reach about 15 conversions a month.
- Fix the landing pages before you scale. My CRO service starts from $500, and a free store review is a good first step.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good Google Ads budget for a small store?
Enough to buy about 15 sales a month at your break-even cost per sale, since Google says target ROAS on Search and Shopping needs roughly 15 conversions in 30 days. At $30 per sale, that's about $450 a month.
Is there a minimum Google Ads budget?
Google's help page on average daily budgets doesn't list one. The practical minimum is whatever lets a campaign collect enough conversions to learn.
Can Google spend more than my daily budget?
Yes, up to twice the average daily budget on a single day. Over a month, spend stays within about 30.4 times the daily budget, and you're not billed beyond your limits.
Is there a Google Ads budget calculator?
The simplest calculator is the formula: break-even cost per sale times about 15, divided by 30.4 for the daily figure. My profit margin calculator helps you find the break-even number.
What is the average Google Ads budget?
Google doesn't publish an average budget for stores, and averages would hide huge differences in margin and price. Work from your own break-even figure instead.
Should I split my budget across many campaigns?
Not at first. A small budget split across many campaigns gives each too little data. One or two well-funded campaigns usually learn faster.
