Christmas Marketing Ideas for Small Businesses: How to Plan Your Store's Christmas Sales

Christmas sales for a small online store are decided by dates: when shoppers start, when your last delivery leaves and what you offer after that. Here is a plan that works backwards from 25 December, with ideas you can set up in Shopify.

Card: gift guides by price, delivery dates on every page and gift cards after the cut-off are in the plan, discounting all December is not
Plan Christmas backwards from your last delivery date, then sell what doesn't need a courier.

Key takeaways

  • Plan backwards from your last guaranteed delivery date, not from 25 December. In 2026, Christmas Day is a Friday, so the final shipping week runs from Monday 14 December.
  • After your last delivery date, keep selling with gift cards, click and collect and local delivery, which Shopify supports without extra apps.
  • Gift guides work best as collections by price and by recipient, built as automated collections so they fill themselves.
  • UK shoppers can cancel online orders within 14 days of delivery by law. An extended Christmas returns window is your choice on top of that, so say clearly how long it runs.

What you need
Carrier cut-off dates and your best gift products

Most small stores plan Christmas around one date, the 25th. The date that matters more is the last day you can promise delivery. Before it, your job is getting gifts ordered early. After it, your job is selling things that don't need a courier. A Christmas plan is mostly about moving shoppers to the right side of that line.

This guide is written for UK stores, with prices in £ and UK carriers, though the plan works anywhere. I build and optimize Shopify stores, and these are the Christmas marketing ideas for small businesses that I'd set up first, with the Shopify settings for each. Shopify paths and UK rules were checked on the official pages on 7 November 2026.

Royal Mail, Evri and DPD publish their Christmas last posting dates each autumn. Check each carrier's own page for the services you use, then set your store's cut-off a day or two earlier to allow for packing. If you're still choosing a carrier, my Royal Mail vs Evri vs DPD comparison covers the differences.

12 days of Christmas marketing ideas

A "12 days" campaign gives you a reason to email and post every day, and gives shoppers a reason to come back. Run it in the first half of December, so the last day lands before your delivery cut-off. Each idea below works on a small budget.

Day 2Gifts under £25Automated collection by price

You don't need a discount every day. Several of these ideas, such as gift guides, stocking fillers and behind the scenes, sell through convenience and story rather than price, which protects your margin after a Black Friday sale.

Build gift guides that fill themselves

Gift guides are the single most useful Christmas page for a small store, because most gift buyers know the budget and the recipient, not the product.

  1. Tag products by recipient. Add tags such as gift-for-him, gift-for-kids or gift-for-coffee-lovers to each product, from Products or with bulk editing.
  2. Create automated collections. Go to Products > Collections, click Create collection, choose Automated, and add a condition such as "Product tag is equal to gift-for-him".
  3. Add price-band collections. Use the price condition to build "Gifts under £10", "under £25" and "under £50". New products drop in automatically.
  4. Add them to navigation. Go to Online Store > Navigation and add a "Gifts" menu item with the guides under it, for the season.
  5. Sort by best selling. In each collection, set the sort order to best selling, so proven gifts sit at the top.
Collection pages are your landing pages: every Christmas email, social post and paid ad should link to the gift guide that matches its message. A shopper who clicks "gifts under £25" and lands on your homepage has to start again.

Make delivery dates impossible to miss

The most common Christmas question in a store's inbox is "will it arrive in time?" Answer it before anyone asks.

  • Announcement bar: "Order by [date] for Christmas delivery", updated as each cut-off passes.
  • Product pages: a short line near the add to cart button with the same date.
  • Shipping rate names: name rates with their promise, such as "Tracked 24: order by [date] for Christmas", in Settings > Shipping and delivery.
  • Express option: keep a next-day or tracked service available for the last few days, at a price that covers it.
  • After the cut-off: change the message to "Arrives after Christmas, or buy a gift card for instant delivery".

If you use Royal Mail, connecting Click and Drop to Shopify saves real time when label volume jumps in December.

Keep selling after the last posting date

Gift cards

A gift card is the perfect last-minute present, because it arrives by email. Go to Products > Gift cards and click Add a gift card product, with sensible values such as £10, £25 and £50. Feature it on the homepage and in emails from your cut-off date onwards. My guide to setting up gift cards on Shopify covers the settings and design.

Click and collect

If you have a shop, studio or warehouse customers can visit, turn on pickup. Go to Settings > Shipping and delivery, then Pickup in store, select the location and turn on Let customers pick up orders directly at this location. Set the expected pickup time and the instructions customers receive.

Local delivery

For stores with local customers, local delivery lets you deliver orders yourself after national carriers have stopped promising Christmas delivery. Go to Settings > Shipping and delivery, open Local delivery, select the location and turn on Deliver orders to customers directly from this location. You can set a radius of up to 100 miles or list the postcodes you cover.

Email and SMS through December

Your email list does more at Christmas than at any other time, because people are actively looking for gifts. Shopify Messaging, which was called Shopify Email, can send email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns from your admin. Its App Store listing says the first 10,000 emails each month are free, with pricing starting at $1 per 1,000 emails after that, as checked on 7 November 2026.

  • Send fewer, more useful emails: one gift guide per email beats a catalog dump.
  • Segment past buyers from new subscribers. Past buyers already trust your delivery.
  • Put the delivery cut-off date in the subject line of the last two pre-Christmas emails.
  • Switch to gift cards and click and collect once the cut-off passes.

Returns and the Christmas returns window

Under UK distance selling rules, customers can cancel an online order for any reason within 14 days of delivery. For a gift ordered on 1 December and delivered on 3 December, that right ends well before the recipient might want to swap it.

That's why many stores offer an extended Christmas returns window, for example accepting returns of items bought from mid-November until mid-January. This is a voluntary policy on top of the legal minimum, so state clearly which orders it covers and the final return date, on your returns page and at checkout. Include a gift receipt or order note option if you can, so recipients can return without the buyer.

Shoppers buying more expensive gifts also look for payment options. If you're considering instalments, my Klarna vs Clearpay comparison covers the costs for UK stores.

Common mistakes

  • Planning around 25 December instead of the last delivery date. Your cut-off decides what you can sell and when.
  • Discounting all of December. Shoppers who would pay full price for convenience get trained to wait.
  • Hiding delivery dates in an FAQ. Put them on every page.
  • Gift guides built by hand. Manual collections go stale. Use tags and price conditions.
  • No plan after the cut-off. Gift cards and pickup keep sales going for another week.
  • Vague returns wording. "Extended returns" without a final date causes disputes in January.

Christmas sales checklist

  1. Cut-off dates set. Your final order date for each shipping service, a day or two before the carrier's.
  2. Gift guides live. Automated collections by recipient and price, in the menu.
  3. 12-day plan written. One idea per day, ending before your cut-off.
  4. Delivery messages in place. Announcement bar, product pages and shipping rate names.
  5. Gift cards ready. A gift card product with sensible values, ready to feature.
  6. Pickup or local delivery on, if customers can reach you.
  7. Emails scheduled. Gift guides, cut-off reminders and gift cards.
  8. Returns policy updated. Extended window with a clear final date.
  9. January plan ready. Boxing Day sale and a reminder to spend gift cards.

Next steps

This week, set your cut-off dates and build the gift guide collections. Then write your 12 days and schedule the emails. If Black Friday is still ahead of you, start with my Black Friday checklist, because the two plans overlap.

Frequently asked questions

When should a small business start Christmas marketing?

Have gift guides live by early November, run your main offer over Black Friday weekend, and spend the first two weeks of December pushing delivery dates. In 2026, Christmas Day is a Friday, so the final shipping week starts on Monday 14 December.

What are good Christmas marketing ideas for small businesses?

Gift guides by price and recipient, a 12 days of Christmas email series, free gift wrap, bundles, a gift with purchase over a set spend, and gift cards after your last delivery date. Several of these sell through convenience rather than discounts.

When is the last posting date for Christmas in the UK?

Royal Mail, Evri and DPD each publish their own Christmas last posting dates every autumn, and they differ by service. Check each carrier's page for the services you use, then set your own cut-off a day or two earlier to allow for packing.

Do I have to accept Christmas returns?

UK customers can cancel an online order within 14 days of delivery for any reason. A longer Christmas returns window is optional, but if you offer one, state which orders it covers and the final return date clearly.

How do I keep selling after the last delivery date?

Feature gift cards, which arrive by email, and turn on click and collect or local delivery if customers can reach you. Change your announcement bar so shoppers know which options still arrive in time.

What is a 12 days of Christmas campaign?

It's a run of 12 daily emails or posts, each with one idea, such as a gift guide, a bundle or free delivery for a day. Finish it before your last delivery date so every offer can still arrive for Christmas.
