How Do I Add a Size Guide to Shopify?

Most free Shopify themes can show a size chart pop-up on product pages with no app at all. It takes a page, a metafield and one block in the theme editor.

Card on adding a Shopify size guide: create a size chart page, add a page metafield, add a pop-up block, and no app is required
A page, a metafield and one block: no app needed.

Key takeaways

  • Create the size chart as a page, add a product metafield of type Page, then add a Pop-up block to your product template and connect it to that metafield.
  • The metafield is created under Settings > Metafields and metaobjects, then Products.
  • Each product can link one size chart page, so you can have different charts for tops, trousers and shoes.
  • It needs a theme that supports dynamic sources. Vintage themes need code edits or a size chart app.

What you need
An Online Store 2.0 theme

To add a size guide in Shopify without an app, create a "Size chart" page with your measurements, add a product metafield of type Page, then add a Pop-up block to your product template in the theme editor and connect its Page setting to that metafield. Finally, pick the right size chart page on each product. Shoppers then see a "Size chart" link on the product page that opens your chart in a pop-up.

This is Shopify's own documented method, as checked on 7 November 2026. It works on Online Store 2.0 themes such as Shopify's free themes.

Step by step, no app

  1. Create the page. Go to Online Store > Pages, click Add page, title it "Size chart" and add your table in Content. Set it to Visible and save. Make one page per chart if you need several.
  2. Create the metafield. Go to Settings > Metafields and metaobjects. Under Metafield definitions, click Products, then Add definition. Name it "Size chart", choose the type Page, keep One page and save.
  3. Create a product template. In Online Store > Edit theme, switch to Products and click Create template, so the link only appears on products that need it.
  4. Add the Pop-up block. In the Product information section, click Add block, choose Pop-up and set the link label to "Size chart".
  5. Connect the metafield. Next to Page, click the dynamic source icon, select your Size chart metafield and save.
  6. Assign it on each product. Open the product, click the Size chart metafield, select the page, set Theme template to your new template and save.
The empty pop-up trap: if a product uses the size chart template but has no page selected, the link still shows and opens an empty pop-up. Only assign the template to products that have a chart.

What to put in the chart

A size guide only helps if shoppers can use it. I'd include:

  • Body measurements and garment measurements, labeled clearly as one or the other.
  • Both inches and centimeters, since customers abroad will see the same chart.
  • A short "how to measure" note with the points to measure.
  • Fit advice, such as "runs small, size up if between sizes".

Keep the table narrow enough to read on a phone, because that's where most shoppers will open it. My mobile CRO checklist covers other product page checks.

When a size chart app is worth it

The free method links one page per product, set by hand. If you have hundreds of products, or want charts assigned automatically by product type, tag or vendor, a size chart app saves hours. Apps also add extras like fit quizzes and unit toggles. Check how much script each app adds, because size chart apps load on every product page. If your theme is a vintage one without dynamic sources, an app or a small code change is your only route.

A tidier option for big catalogs

For stores with many charts, I often build size charts as metaobjects instead of pages: each chart is a structured entry with rows and columns, shown by a custom section. It keeps formatting consistent and makes charts easy to edit. My guide to Shopify metaobjects explains the idea, and my metafields guide covers the field types.

By country

US shoppers expect inches and US sizes, UK shoppers UK sizes, and EU and Australian shoppers centimeters with their own size labels. If you sell to several markets, show the conversions in the chart rather than making shoppers guess. My page on Shopify for fashion brands covers what else clothing stores need.

What to do next

  1. Write your chart with body and garment measurements in both units.
  2. Follow the six steps above on a duplicate of your theme first.
  3. Test it on a phone.
  4. Want it built for you? My store development work starts from $300, and a size chart section is a small, fixed-price job.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a size chart to Shopify without an app?

Create a size chart page, add a product metafield of type Page under Settings > Metafields and metaobjects, add a Pop-up block to your product template, connect it to the metafield, and pick the page on each product.

Can I have different size charts for different products?

Yes. Make one page per chart and choose the right page in each product's Size chart metafield. Each product can link one page.

Why is my Shopify size chart pop-up empty?

The product uses the template with the pop-up block but has no page selected in its metafield. Assign a page, or move the product to a template without the block.

Does the size chart pop-up work on every theme?

It needs a theme that supports dynamic sources, such as Shopify's Online Store 2.0 themes. Vintage themes need code edits or a size chart app.

Do I need a size chart app?

Not for most stores. An app helps when you have a large catalog and want charts assigned automatically by type or tag, or extras like fit quizzes.

Where should the size chart link go on the product page?

Next to the size selector, so shoppers see it at the moment they choose a size.
