Overview
What clothing stores need to sell
Clothes are bought on fit, fabric and how a piece looks on a body. Online, the shopper can't touch the cloth or try it on, so the product page has to answer three questions before they pay: will it fit me, what does it feel like, and can I send it back? Most fashion stores I review lose sales on the first one. The size chart hides in a pop-up, there's no model height or size worn, and nobody says the cut runs small. Shoppers either order two sizes and return one, or leave.
The catalog needs as much planning as the design. One dress in four colors and six sizes is 24 variants. Shopify now allows up to 2,048 variants per product but still caps each product at three options, so a fourth attribute such as length needs linked products or a different setup. I connect colors to Shopify's category metafields, so the theme shows real swatches and the Search & Discovery app can filter by color, size and fabric. Fabric, care and fit notes go into metafields too, so they appear in the same place on every product and stay easy to update next season.
Trust in fashion comes from photos on real bodies, reviews that mention fit, clear delivery dates and a returns page that reads like a promise. The law adds its own layer: in the US and the EU, fiber content has to appear in the online listing, not only on the sewn-in label.
The closest build I can point to is IrelandsEye Knitwear, a Dublin brand selling natural-yarn sweaters and cardigans across Europe and beyond. We built it on Shopify's Dawn foundation with custom sections and Shopify Markets, so each country sees its own currency, shoppers can compare colors and styles quickly, and gifting is easy in peak season. Your store gets the same thinking, shaped around your range.
Where fashion stores lose sales
- The size chart sits in a pop-up nobody opens.
- Photos show the garment flat, never on a body with a size worn.
- Each color is a separate product, so shoppers miss the other shades.
- Fabric and care details are missing or buried in a paragraph.
- The returns policy is hard to find, so first-time buyers hesitate.
What I build for fashion stores
Size and fit guidance
Size charts per product type stored in metafields, plus model height and size worn, shown next to the size picker instead of in a pop-up.
Color swatches and variants
Colors linked to Shopify's category metafields so the theme shows real swatches, with gallery images that switch when a shopper picks a shade.
Filters that match how people shop
Size, color, fabric and fit filters built with the Search & Discovery app, so shoppers can see only what's in stock in their size.
Lookbooks and shoppable edits
Custom sections that show complete outfits and link each piece, so a seasonal story leads straight to the products.
Returns and exchanges flow
A clear returns page, Shopify's self-serve returns or a returns app that offers size exchanges first, and the policy summarized on every product page.
Markets and drops
Shopify Markets for local currencies and languages, and launch pages for new collections with back-in-stock alerts through an app.
Benefits
Why fashion brands work with me
CRO, not only design
I run conversion work on Shopify stores, so the size picker, photo order and returns copy are set up to reduce hesitation, not just to look good.
Built for next season
Options, swatches and metafields are planned before the theme is touched, so adding a new collection is an import, not a rebuild.

How it works
How a fashion store build works
- 1
Free review and fixed quote
I look at your range, sizing, photos and current store, send three points on what to fix first, then a fixed quote and timeline.
- 2
Catalog and data plan
Options, swatches, size charts and fabric fields are mapped, and a sample of products is imported to test filters and variant images.
- 3
Design and build
Theme, product page, collection filters, lookbooks and the returns flow are built and tested on phones first, then on desktop.
- 4
Launch and first fixes
Payments, taxes, shipping and markets are checked, the store goes live, and I review the first weeks of behavior to fix what slows buyers down.
Is it a fit?
Is this the right fit
A good fit
- You sell clothing in several sizes and colors and want them shown clearly.
- Returns for fit are eating into your margin.
- You're launching a label and want the store right from the first collection.
- You sell, or plan to sell, in more than one country.
- You want one fixed quote, not an open hourly bill.
Not the right fit
- You need ad management. I don't offer it, though I can fix the pages your ads point to.
- You want a marketplace with many sellers rather than your own brand store.
- You need a photo shoot produced. I can brief one, but I don't shoot it.
Comparison
Rules to get right, by country
| Aspect | What applies | On your Shopify store |
|---|---|---|
| US: fiber and origin | Online product descriptions must state fiber content and whether it's made in USA, imported or both. | Fiber and origin fields on every product. |
| US: care labels | Garments must have care instructions on a permanent label. | Care details repeated in a product tab. |
| EU: fiber composition | Fiber composition must be clearly visible before purchase, including online. | Composition by percentage near the size picker. |
| EU: product safety info | Online offers must show manufacturer details, product identification with a picture, and any warnings. | Manufacturer and safety block on product pages. |
| UK: returns | Buyers have 14 days from delivery to cancel; refund within 14 days of getting the item back. | Returns page and emails state both deadlines. |
| Australia: care labelling | Care instructions in English, the five international care symbols, or both. | Care symbols and text on product pages. |

FAQ
Your questions, answered.
What fashion and clothing brands ask before starting a Shopify project.
Ask me about your storeWhat's the best Shopify theme for a clothing store?
There isn't one best theme. I look for a strong variant picker with swatches, quick add on collection pages and fast image loading. Free themes such as Dawn are a solid base, and paid themes can save time when their layout already fits your range.
How do I make a Shopify clothing store?
Start with the catalog: decide your options (size, color, fit), photograph every color, and write fabric and care details once per product type. Then pick a theme, set up shipping, taxes and returns, and test the whole store on a phone. If you'd rather hand it over, I do the full build.
How much does a Shopify clothing store cost to build?
Store design and development starts from $300. The final figure depends on catalog size, custom sections, markets and apps. Every project gets a fixed quote after a free review, so you know the total before work starts.
Can Shopify handle many sizes and colors?
Yes. Shopify allows up to 2,048 variants per product, with up to three options such as size, color and fit. If you need a fourth option, I split the range into linked products or, on Shopify Plus, use the Combined Listings app.
How do I cut returns for fit?
Put fit information where the decision is made: model height and size worn, a size chart per product type beside the size picker, and fit notes drawn from reviews. Make exchanges easier than refunds, so a wrong size becomes a swap instead of a lost sale.
Can I see Shopify clothing store examples you've built?
The closest is IrelandsEye Knitwear, a Dublin brand selling natural-yarn sweaters and cardigans across Europe in local currencies. You can see it and other builds on my work page, and I'm happy to walk through how a feature was done.
Do I need to show fiber content on product pages?
In the US and the EU, yes: the rules cover online listings, not just the label. US listings also need to say whether an item is made in the USA or imported. The table above reflects official pages checked on 7 November 2026, but check with an adviser for your exact products.
Can you redesign my existing clothing store instead of starting over?
Yes. Many fashion stores need a better product page, filters and size guidance more than a new store. I'll tell you in the free review whether a redesign or targeted fixes make more sense.
Keep exploring
