Overview
When a custom theme pays off
Most stores don't need a custom theme. A good Theme Store theme, customised well, covers most catalogues, and if that's true for your store I'll say so in the review. The theme vs custom build comparison sets out the trade-offs. A custom theme earns its place when your brand, products or content don't fit a template: a product configurator, spec-heavy product pages, editorial content that drives sales, or a design system you already use elsewhere.
Shopify themes are built with Liquid. JSON templates arrange sections, and sections hold blocks that merchants can add, remove and reorder. I build your design in exactly that structure, with settings on every section and block, so your team can build and rearrange pages in the theme editor without code. Product details that differ from item to item, such as materials, care or technical specs, go into metafields and metaobjects rather than being typed into templates.
I develop locally with Shopify CLI on a development theme, run Theme Check, and keep the code in a GitHub repository connected to your store. That integration syncs both ways, so changes made in the theme editor are committed too. For quality, I use Shopify's Theme Store minimums as a floor: an average Lighthouse performance score of at least 60 and accessibility of at least 90 across the home, product and collection pages, on desktop and mobile, measured with real content. One trade-off to know before you commit: Shopify only offers updates for Theme Store themes, and uploaded themes don't get automatic updates, so a custom theme's updates come from me or whoever maintains it.
Custom theme work starts from $500, with a fixed quote in writing after a free review. The custom Shopify theme cost guide explains what drives the price. When a customised existing theme is the better fit, store design and development starts from $300.
Signs you need this
- Your store looks like every other store on the same theme.
- Your products need a layout no theme offers, such as a configurator or a detailed spec page.
- Years of edits and apps have left your current theme slow and fragile.
- You have finished designs that a template can't match.
- Your team wants to build editorial pages without a developer.

Benefits
Why build with me
Honest about when you don't need it
If a customised Theme Store theme does the job, I'll say so in the review and quote that instead.
Built for your team to run
Every section and block has settings and notes, so day-to-day page changes don't wait on a developer.

How it works
How it works
- 1
Free review and fixed quote
I look at your store, designs and catalogue, send three points on what needs care, then a fixed quote and timeline in writing.
- 2
Structure and design
We agree the page types, sections, blocks and product data model before any code is written.
- 3
Build on a development theme
The theme is built and tested on an unpublished theme while your current store keeps selling, and you review it as it grows.
- 4
Launch and handover
Content is moved into the new sections, scores are checked on the live theme, and you get the repository and section guide.
Is it a fit?
Is a custom theme right for you
A good fit
- Your brand is a big part of why customers buy from you.
- Your products need page layouts or data that standard themes don't offer.
- You've outgrown a heavily edited theme and want a clean base.
- You want a theme your team can edit without breaking it.
- You have someone, or a plan, to maintain the theme after launch.
Not the right fit
- You're launching your first store and still testing products. Start with a Theme Store theme.
- A theme plus a few custom sections would cover your needs, which costs less as theme customisation.
- You want a headless storefront built with Hydrogen rather than a Liquid theme.

FAQ
Your questions, answered.
What store owners ask before starting this kind of project.
Ask me about your storeHow much does custom Shopify theme development cost?
It starts from $500. The exact price depends on the number of page types and custom sections, the product data involved and whether design is included. I review your store and plans for free and send one fixed quote in writing.
Do I get the theme code?
Yes. You get the full theme code and the repository, so you can keep working with me or hand it to any other Shopify developer.
Will a custom theme get updates like a Theme Store theme?
No. Shopify only offers theme updates for themes installed from the Theme Store, and uploaded themes don't get automatic updates. A custom theme is maintained by me or your own developer instead.
Can my team still edit pages?
Yes. Every section and block is built with settings, so your team can add, remove and reorder content in the theme editor, and you get a guide to each one.
Will a custom theme be fast?
I test the build against Shopify's Theme Store minimums of 60 for performance and 90 for accessibility in Lighthouse. Apps, images and scripts you add later also affect speed, so the handover notes cover what to watch.
Can you build from our designs?
Yes. I can build from finished designs, or we can work out the design together first. Either way, the design is turned into sections and blocks your team can reuse.
Will my apps still work?
Apps built with theme app extensions show up in the theme editor and work across themes, so they're placed with a few clicks. Older apps that inject code may need setting up again, and I check each one in the review.
Should I customise my current theme instead?
Often, yes. If your theme's structure suits your products, customising it is quicker and cheaper. I'll recommend one route or the other in the free review.
